This Africa Day, we highlight the importance of breast cancer awareness across the continent.

Studies in sub-Saharan Africa show that many women are still diagnosed with breast cancer at late stages. Research also shows that survival rates in parts of Africa remain below 50%, largely due to limited awareness, delayed diagnosis, and reduced access to screening and treatment.

The good news is that early detection saves lives. Regular self-checks, awareness, and timely screening can make a difference for African women and communities.

At BCCF, we are committed to providing FREE breast cancer screening and awareness services in Malawi because every woman deserves access to early care and support.

A lump or thickening in the breast, armpit, or around the collarbone should not be ignored, even if it is painless. Many women assume that if a lump doesn’t hurt, it is harmless, but that is not always the case.

Knowing what is normal for your body is one of the most important steps in early detection. Regular self-checks help you notice changes sooner and seek help early.

At Breast Cancer Care Foundation Malawi, we encourage women to:
- Check their breasts monthly
- Pay attention to any new lumps or thickening
- Come for screening if they notice anything unusual

Remember: finding a lump does not automatically mean cancer, but it is always important to get it checked by a healthcare professional. Early detection can save lives.

BCCF provides FREE breast cancer screening, education, and support services every Wednesday and Friday at our clinic.

BCCF conducted a breast cancer awareness session for 70 police women from the Blantyre Unit in Wenela, held at Blantyre Lodge.

It was an impactful engagement with women in uniform who play a vital role in reaching and influencing communities with life-saving information. We were encouraged by the strong support from the Officer Commanding (OC) Blantyre, who emphasized the importance of screening and awareness.

The session was interactive, with important questions raised around male breast self-examination, signs and symptoms of breast cancer, and breastfeeding after diagnosis.

Together, we continue to promote early detection and save lives.

Yesterday, on the 23rd of April 2026 our team conducted an outreach screening clinic at Ilovo Nchalo. 75 women were screened.

One question stood out:
“Why should we bother doing this screening?”

Because breast cancer does not always show early signs but screening helps detect changes before they become serious.
Because early detection saves lives.
Because taking a few minutes today could protect your future.

Moments like these remind us why this work matters, women showing up, asking questions, and choosing their health.

BCCF continues to provide FREE breast cancer screening and awareness services in communities, workplaces, and at our clinic.

Your health matters. Don’t wait.

FACT OR MYTH?
Let’s talk about it.

“Only older women get breast cancer.” — MYTH.

While the risk increases after 40, younger women can and do get breast cancer, even here in Malawi. That’s why knowing your normal, checking monthly, and getting screened early is so important at any age. It saves lives.

At Breast Cancer Care Foundation Malawi, our services are FREE because every woman deserves access to early detection and support.
