Involving students in climate change action initiatives does more than plant trees; it equips young minds with essential knowledge of climate science, builds community resilience, and prepares them for the green jobs of tomorrow.

These efforts create a dual impact: combating environmental degradation while delivering experiential education that aligns with Sustainable Development Goals 13 (Climate Action) and 4 (Quality Education).

Here at Lead- Her, we believe that by engaging children early, we ensure sustained action. Today's students will inherit the long-term consequences of our current environmental decisions, so empowering them now cultivates lifelong stewards of the planet.

Hands-on activities like tree planting teach vital concepts, such as photosynthesis's role in carbon sequestration, soil conservation, and ecosystem restoration, while sparking interest in fields like environmental engineering, and sustainable agriculture. That's why we found it amazing to engage students in these initiatives while retaining our core objective of addressing girls' under-respresentation in STEM fields.

On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, we teamed up with students at Kholomana Primary School to plant 20 trees. The session included interactive lessons on climate impacts like deforestation and droughts, helping students grasp how trees mitigate flooding, enhance biodiversity, and create cooler microclimates.

Scaling the same exercise up, today—Friday, February 27, 2026—we wrapped up the project phase at Lutchenza Primary School. Students actively participated, applying what they'd learned to select sites, dig holes, and water saplings. This phase marks a resounding success, with over 80 trees now in the ground across four schools.

The real work begins now: nurturing these trees to maturity through regular care, monitoring growth, and involving students in follow-up education. Early signs are promising, with healthy rooting and community buy-in.

By blending climate action with quality education, we're not just greening schools, we're raising a generation ready to lead Malawi toward a resilient, sustainable future.

The goal remains unchanged: to plant 100 trees across five schools, with 20 trees at each.

Today, we are at Namitembe Primary School in Chiradzulu, where we have planted 20 trees.

At Lead-Her, we primarily champion SDG 4 (Quality Education), particularly addressing inequality in STEM Education, where girls are marginalized. This also directly supports SDGs 5 and 10, that's, Gender Equality and Reduced Inequality, respectively.

We recognize the interconnected nature of these SDGs, where progress in one area bolsters others. For this reason, we are also taking direct action against climate change to advance SDG 13 (Climate Action).

We also acknowledge that Inclusion is central to climate justice, so we intentionally involve these learners to instill in them environmental responsibility. Every learner plants their own tree, fostering a profound sense of ownership and accountability, ensuring every tress planted grows.

Today, 13 February 2026, we visited Mombo Primary School in Chiradzulu for a tree-planting initiative, where we successfully planted over 20 trees. We are fully committed to their long-term growth and care.

Our primary focus remains promoting girls' participation in STEM education, aligning with SDG 4 (Quality Education). Recognizing the interconnectedness of the SDGs, we address climate change through annual tree-planting efforts in support of SDG 13 (Climate Action). We believe that sustainable quality education requires a stable environment. We also believe that engaging these young students in climate change mitigation initiatives is not only a way of making our project sustainable, but also teaching them the importance of such initiatives.

We aim to plant at least 100 trees , 20 at each primary school. Next week, we will replicate this to Namitembe, Kholomana, Thuchira, and Licheza Primary Schools.

We invite you to share your thoughts on integrating education and environmental initiatives. How can we collaborate for greater impact?

Happy Chilembwe's Day, everyone! Freedom arrives in many forms, but our deepest gratitude remains undoubtedly due to Rev. John Chilembwe for liberating us from the shackles of colonial oppression. May this day be a language of hope and possibility that with determination and courage we can break free from all the things that keep us caged and contribute patriotically towards national development aspirations.

CDSS to Pursuing a STEM Programme at MUST #

Kinovati Howa, one of the Lead-Her STEM mentors from the Malawi University Of Science and Technology (MUST), shares her inspiring story.

" Poverty shouldn't hinder girls from pursuing their academic goals. There are a lot of organisations that support girls with scholarship opportunities provided they have demonstrated unwavering potential in their pursuits. Yes, girls also thrive in sciences; it's not only reserved for boys."

We would like to take our time to congratulate the newly crowned Miss Malawi, Thandie Chisi ! This is great.

We know this platform is beyond the beauty pageantry. It's a platform of influence. It's a platform of inspiration for young girls and women. It's a platform for amplification of marginalised voices. It's a leadership platform. It's a platform of determination for a young girl, who always believes in their dreams and capacity. It's a social capital that opens doors to endless opportunities that empower these beauty queens to make meaningful impact in their society. They can use it to advocate for girl child education. They can use it to establish social enterprises for women economic empowerment, ensuring their economic independence and resilience to GBV.

We exist to empower girls. We want them to become substantial leaders in STEM. We can't achieve this alone. We, sometimes, need to collaborate with people of influence like Miss Malawi to achieve our campaign goals. We are therefore excited for this, and looking forward to collaborating with them.

We would also like to congratulate the leadership of this year's Miss Malawi events. Everything was on point. And they have successfully dismissed the negative stereotypes associated with this platform. It's mission is very clear now.

It would be unjust to forget all contestants. Good job. This wasn't an easy journey. You all deserve a big congratulations! From our point of view, this journey has been nothing, but full of rewarding experiences for you. Go and use the experiences to change lives out there. Congratulations 🎉 🎉 👏!

Day 15 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

Lead-Her would like to emphasize that this commemoration serves as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to create a world free from gender-based violence (GBV).

While girls and women are disproportionately affected, GBV impacts individuals of all genders. This includes all forms of violence, such as intimate partner violence and the increasingly prevalent issue of cyberbullying. It is imperative that we come together, men and women alike, to end all manifestations of GBV.

We encourage everyone to report incidents and stand united in fostering a safe, respectful, and harmonious society where everyone can thrive.

Let's refrain from using our social media platforms to harm other people's faces. Let's make these platforms safe for women and girls. They should feel safe to join digital entrepreneurship , and participate in various public discourses without any fear.

Together we can make the world safe, inclusive, and dignified for everyone.
