Involving students in climate change action initiatives does more than plant trees; it equips young minds with essential knowledge of climate science, builds community resilience, and prepares them for the green jobs of tomorrow.
These efforts create a dual impact: combating environmental degradation while delivering experiential education that aligns with Sustainable Development Goals 13 (Climate Action) and 4 (Quality Education).
Here at Lead- Her, we believe that by engaging children early, we ensure sustained action. Today's students will inherit the long-term consequences of our current environmental decisions, so empowering them now cultivates lifelong stewards of the planet.
Hands-on activities like tree planting teach vital concepts, such as photosynthesis's role in carbon sequestration, soil conservation, and ecosystem restoration, while sparking interest in fields like environmental engineering, and sustainable agriculture. That's why we found it amazing to engage students in these initiatives while retaining our core objective of addressing girls' under-respresentation in STEM fields.
On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, we teamed up with students at Kholomana Primary School to plant 20 trees. The session included interactive lessons on climate impacts like deforestation and droughts, helping students grasp how trees mitigate flooding, enhance biodiversity, and create cooler microclimates.
Scaling the same exercise up, today—Friday, February 27, 2026—we wrapped up the project phase at Lutchenza Primary School. Students actively participated, applying what they'd learned to select sites, dig holes, and water saplings. This phase marks a resounding success, with over 80 trees now in the ground across four schools.
The real work begins now: nurturing these trees to maturity through regular care, monitoring growth, and involving students in follow-up education. Early signs are promising, with healthy rooting and community buy-in.
By blending climate action with quality education, we're not just greening schools, we're raising a generation ready to lead Malawi toward a resilient, sustainable future.
