Promoting Climate-Smart Agriculture Through Women-Led Action
Through Mzimai Odzidalira Program which is in the second year now, Community Rise Organization in partnership with 한국희망재단 is conducting training sessions for four Savings and Internal Lending Community (SILC) groups under group village heads Mandanda, Matwika and Ntonya, Traditional Authority Nkanda in Mulanje, that selected small-scale irrigation farming as their community enterprise. These women are the mothers of girls who are under Girls Safe Space- the efforts to end child marriages and keeping girls in schools.
As part of preparing for this year’s farming season, the groups are being trained in organic fertilizer making to promote smart and sustainable agriculture in response to the growing effects of climate change.
The training will equip 100 women from the four SILC groups with practical skills and knowledge to produce and utilize organic fertilizers in their homes and farming activities.
In demonstrating community ownership and participation, group members have already contributed locally available materials such as maize husks, manure, ash, and other resources needed for the process. Throughout the month of May, the women will produce two types of organic fertilizer to support environmentally friendly farming practices.
Mzimai Odzidalira Program, as a community-led initiative, not only focuses on women’s economic empowerment but also promotes environmental protection and resilience, recognizing that more than 80% of Malawians depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.
