Youth Active in Community Development Organisation (YACODO) with support from Marie Schrlei Association (MSA), is implementing a “Sustainable Organic Irrigation Farming Skills for Rural Women” project aiming at providing solutions to food insecurity and socio-economic challenges facing rural communities specifically widows, divorced women and young women by developing their agricultural technical skills, specifically in regard to modern organic irrigation farming and marketing. The project is being implemented in Misanjo area, Traditional Authority Mabuka, Mulanje District. The project is for 12 months (July 2024 to June 2025).

Specifically, the project established five (5) community women agricultural cooperatives to involved in sustainable organic irrigation farming using surface solar water pumps, trained 100 women entrepreneurs in organic agricultural production and marketing (entrepreneurship), will create market linkages, purchased and distributed agricultural equipment and inputs to five established women cooperatives and conducted learning visit to other cooperatives to learn best practices and adopt the same to their respective gardens. This project is very essential in the sense that it is providing solution to household’s food insecurity, livelihoods and environmental challenges facing rural communities especially vulnerable women of TA Mabuka, in Mulanje.

YACODO is a local Non-Governmental Organisation/Community Based Organisation established way back in 1998 by a group of young people of Mpemba Community after being concerned over the increased number of orphans and vulnerable children, older people, people living with HIV/AIDS, destitute young people, widows and divorced women, poor families and communities.

The Organisation functions on the community level to achieve the lasting improvement in the physical, social, economical, emotional and spiritual lives of the disadvantaged persons through the facilitation of programmes such as ; income generating activities, educational programmes, HIV/AIDS and nutrition, Food security, water and sanitation, environmental conservation, capacity building and safeguarding the rights of all mankind.

Youth Active in Community Development Organisation (YACODO) is legally registered with the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM), registration number NYCOM/136 and got registered as youth NGO in 1998. It is also registered with the Blantyre City Council, registration number BTC/206/237 and is underway registering with the registrar of companies under the trustee’s incorporation act of the laws of Malawi and the quoted number is TR/INC8346.
