Our CEO on the spotlight as one of the 2026 African Visionary Fellow!

Climate risk is shared. Vulnerability is not. โš ๏ธ

Daniel Mwakameka ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ผ focuses on what that difference looks like in Malawiโ€™s ecosystems and in the households that depend on them.

Through Action for Environmental Sustainability, he links conservation to daily life by restoring and protecting natural areas, promoting climate-smart practices, and supporting livelihoods connected to land and water.

The environment isnโ€™t separate from income; itโ€™s what many families are paid by, fed by, and protected by.

With 15+ years in environmental management and a PhD in Development Studies, he keeps a long view without losing the thread of what people face on the ground.

He treats โ€œresilienceโ€ as a set of choices and trade-offs that show up in routines, access to resources, and the support communities can depend on when conditions shift.

Outside of work, he enjoys mentoring young people, spending time with family and friends, and exploring nature, qualities that mirror the care and consistency he brings to his work.

That's why we are proud to welcome Daniel Mwakameka as a 2026 African Visionary Fellow. ๐Ÿ’š

If his work resonates with you, follow him and his team and feel free to leave him a note in the comments below. โœจ

Bold ideas. Local leadership. A new cohort. ๐ŸŒ Meet the 2026 African Visionary Fellows. ๐Ÿ’š
__________

This week, at the African Visionary Fellowship Summit in Nairobi, we are welcoming the 2026 African Visionary Fellows into a growing community of bold leaders shaping change across the continent.

Let's roll out the red carpet to welcome:

They are joining a powerful community of 130+ other African Visionary Fellows.

The African Visionary Fellowship itself is built around three simple yet powerful elements: coaching, community, and connections. At its core is a belief that feels almost obvious once you say it out loud: the people closest to the challenges are often the ones who understand them most deeply. ๐Ÿ’ซ

And yet, across global philanthropy, only about 1% of funding reaches locally-led organizations. That reality is part of what inspired the creation of the Fellowship.

Since 2017, AVF has supported early-stage African leaders with mentorship, exposure, and a peer network that understands what it truly takes to build change from the ground up.

What began as a Fellowship has grown into something far greater.

A community of visionaries across Africa. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

It's become a network of changemakers who learn from one another, challenge one another, and share the quiet realities of doing difficult but deeply meaningful work in complex environments.

The AVF Summit is just the beginning: a glimpse of the kind of community, reflection, and collaboration that unfolds throughout the two-year Fellowship journey.

Now that the 2026 African Visionary Fellows are here, click through, meet them, follow them, learn from them, and stay tuned for so much more. โœจ

Last week was once an amazing week for us to have the privilege to host our friends from Global Nature Fund (GNF) who are leading the implementation of our Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate (https://livinglakes.org/biodiversity-climate-project/) project which is being implemented in Traditional Authority Namavi in Mongochi district here in Malawi and its also being implemented in 10 more other countries across the continent including cambidia, colombia, india, mexco, peru, phillipines, Rwanda, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

The Global Nature Fund (GNF) visit in Malawi, included a very robust financial workshop at AfES offices and a field visit to traditional authority Namavi in Mangochi District where they had meetings with the small holder farmers and fishers to appreciate the impact of the LLBCP project in sectors of fisheries, forestry management and sustainable agriculture. , , , , , , ,

38 more villages to receive micro-grants for implementation of their own pathways in Phalombe district through our Green Facilitated Collective Action Program!

The Green Facilitated Collective Action Program (Green FCAP) is a livelihood improvement and environmental conservation project that aims at developing the livelihood status and environmental quality of villages and communities through advocacy and provision of microgrants. The total micro-grant disbursed per village is MWK 20,400,000 which is also given in 2 phases as microgrant 1 (MG1-60%) and microgrant 2 (MG2-40%). The program is being implemented in Phalombe District in 3 traditional authorities namely T/A Mkhumba (24 villages), T/A Kaledzela (13 villages) and T/A Nyambalo (13 villages). The program enables the villages to go through the planning and implementation of initiatives that they choose without any external influence. The program started in 2023 with 12 villages of T/A Mkhumba as a pilot and after successful implementation, this year it has expanded in 38 more villages of T/A Mkhumba, T/A Kaledzela and T/A Nyambalo. In total 50 villages will be reached with our flexible micro-grants program which is being support by Spark Micro-grants.

Learning Agroecology from our Colombian partner!

It has been an amazing week to take part in the Sustainable Leadership Journey workshop in Colombia ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ด. The most interesting part has been our participation to a symposium at the agroecology training center which is being operated by our partner fundacion humedales. The center has so far graduated more than 300 farmers who are applying the skills learned in thier own farm gardens.
