Day 2 at the 2026 Malawi International Trade Fair.

Today, hear from our Wholesale Commercial Manager, Angellina Harawa, as she shares how the DAPP Malawi Clothes and Shoes Project goes beyond providing affordable clothing and footwear.

Through the project, every purchase becomes part of something bigger โ€” supporting our social development initiatives that create lasting impact in communities. From education and health to sustainable livelihoods and community development, the Clothes and Shoes Project helps strengthen programs that improve lives.

By giving clothes and shoes a second life, we are also creating opportunities and building a better future for people and communities.

Together, we turn used clothes into hope, action and development.

Disability stakeholders in Malawi are calling for urgent reviews of the National Employment and labour Policy and the National Social Protection Policy, citing gaps that continue to exclude persons with disabilities from employment and social protection systems.

The call follows a national policy dialogue meeting held in Lilongwe under the United for Africa Disability Protocol (U4ADP) Project. Stakeholders emphasised the need to move beyond policy formulation to real action that delivers meaningful change.

Speaking at the meeting, DAPP Malawi Country Director Moses Chibwana stressed that inclusive development will remain a challenge if structural barriers are not addressed, while Human Rights for Women and Girls with Disabilities in Malawi - hrwgdm Executive Director Stella Nkhonya highlighted the need for practical, inclusive policies aligned to the African Disability Protocol.

Key concerns raised included exclusion from formal employment systems, limited access to social protection, barriers faced by women with disabilities, lack of workplace accommodation, and weak data systems.

As a way forward, stakeholders agreed to develop a strong advocacy strategy to lobby Parliament and Government. This will include producing policy briefs on the National Employment and labour Policy and the National Social Protection Policy to support engagement and push for reforms.

โ€œWe cannot continue to have policies that do not reflect the realities on the ground. This is the time to act,โ€ said Charles Banda, Chairperson for Lilongwe District Disability Forum.

During the just-ended school holiday, our 400 Primary School Program held productive planning sessions in our three Teacher Training Colleges namely, Chilangoma, Dowa, and Mzimba, to strengthen the path ahead for learning.

The sessions focused on developing a comprehensive program overview, which included the curriculum, cultural and community activities, school improvement and campaigns, Teacher Planet Protection activities, as well as teaching using subject element books, also known as spine books. This guide will support teachers in planning and effectively implementing activities across the program.

The 400 Primary School Program, also known as the ๐‘ป๐’†๐’‚๐’„๐’‰๐’†๐’“๐’”, works to improve the quality of primary education in public schools by supporting DAPP graduated teachers to promote child-centred teaching methods, strengthen school management, and create better learning opportunities for children in rural communities.

Through close collaboration with schools and communities, the program helps children gain the knowledge, confidence, and skills they need for a brighter future.

World Malaria Day reminds us: malaria is deadly but preventable and treatable. It traps families in cycles of illness and poverty, hitting women, pregnant women, and children the hardest. We need innovative strategies and tools to break barriers and protect these vulnerable groups. In Africa, 36 million pregnancies were recorded in 2025, and 13 million (36%) were affected by malaria (WHO).

In partnership with Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi (fedoma), we have successfully trained 210 primary school teachers from Kapita, Mvera, and Boma Education Zones, equipping them with practical skills in inclusive education, child-centred teaching, and learner support strategies.

Funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland through UFF Finland, the project is helping to ensure that girls and children with disabilities learn in classrooms where they are seen, supported, and given equal opportunities to succeed.

The impact of the training was best captured by one of the participants, Lungu Okeke Uche, a teacher at James Primary School, who said:
โ€œThis training has transformed the way we teach. We now have the knowledge and confidence to support every learner and make our classrooms more inclusive.โ€

With better-equipped teachers, learners in Kapita, Mvera, and Boma Zones can look forward to brighter futures, improved learning experiences, and stronger opportunities to reach their full potential.

At DAPP Malawi, we believe that when teachers grow, children thrive. Together with our partners and communities, we are building classrooms where no child is left behind.

Every year on 22nd April, the world comes together to commemorate โ€”a moment to reflect on our shared responsibility to protect the environment and promote sustainable practices. In many cases, communities and organizations take action even before the day itself, turning awareness into meaningful, community-driven activities.

This year, through our Second-Hand Clothes and Shoes Project, we proudly joined hands with Blantyre City Council, NBS Bank Plc, and the Limbe Market vendorsโ€”many of whom are not only partners but also valued customers in our work. Together, we marked the occasion over the weekend through a joint clean-up exercise at Limbe Flea Market, alongside a donation of essential sanitation materials to Blantyre City Council.

These efforts were aimed at promoting improved hygiene and sanitation within Limbe Township.

The day began with an energizing big walk from our retail outlet near Kapenga Bus Stage, opposite NBS Bank Limbe Service Centre, leading all the way to Limbe Market where the clean-up exercise took place.

The strong participation from community members and partners reflected a shared commitment to creating cleaner and healthier environments.

At DAPP Malawi, such initiatives are closely linked to our core work in the textile and second-hand clothing sector. By promoting the reuse and upcycling of clothes and shoes, we actively contribute to reducing textile waste.

Extending the life of garments through second-hand markets not only makes clothing more accessible and affordable, but also reduces the demand for new textile production, which often consumes significant water, energy, and raw materials.

Clean environments and sustainable consumption go hand in hand. By keeping marketplaces like Limbe clean and promoting the reuse of textiles, we are supporting a circular economy that benefits both people and the planet.

We are proud to share a feature story published in The Daily Times on April 22, 2026: โ€œThe knock that saves lives: Inside Malawiโ€™s community fight against TB.โ€

The story highlights the impact of a community-driven TB programme implemented by DAPP Malawi, with funding from the Global Fund through World Vision Malawi. It brings to life the work of dedicated community volunteers who go door-to-doorโ€”often by bicycleโ€”identifying suspected TB cases, raising awareness, and supporting treatment adherence in underserved communities.

In 2025 alone, these community-led efforts identified over 1,300 TB cases, surpassing annual targets and demonstrating the effectiveness of grassroots, people-centred approaches to public health. Beyond the numbers, the story captures real experiences of individuals whose lives have been transformed through early diagnosis, timely treatment, and sustained community support.

This is the power of Communication for Developmentโ€”using storytelling to amplify community voices, reduce stigma, promote health-seeking behaviour, and connect people to essential services. It is a reminder that when communities are informed, empowered, and engaged, they become key drivers of sustainable development outcomes.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Times Group Malawi for providing a platform to share this important story and showcase the impact of collaborative efforts in strengthening TB detection, referral, and treatment support systems.

Together, let us continue telling stories that inform, inspire, and save lives.

Today (19/04/26), through our Second-Hand Clothes and Shoes sector, we proudly joined the global community in commemorating with action and purpose in Limbe Market.

In partnership with Blantyre City Council and NBS Bank Malawi, we kicked off the day with an energizing big walk from our DAPP Retail Shop in Limbe (opposite NBS Bank - Limbe Branch), leading into a vibrant cleaning exercise at Limbe Market. Alongside this, we donated essential sanitation items to the Blantyre City Assemblyโ€”supporting ongoing efforts to keep our city clean and healthy.

We were honored by the presence of His Worship, the Mayor of Blantyre City, Mr. Isaac Jomo Osman, whose support highlights the importance of collective responsibility in building sustainable communities.

reminds us that we only have this mother earth and that the environment is our shared homeโ€”and its protection starts with everyday actions. From reducing waste to promoting reuse, every step counts. At DAPP Malawi, our work in second-hand clothing is rooted in this mission: extending the life of textiles, reducing environmental impact, and encouraging a culture of sustainability.

We believe that real change happens when communities, partners, and institutions come together. Todayโ€™s activity is not just a one-day eventโ€”it is part of our ongoing commitment to environmental conservation, healthier communities, and a greener future for Malawi.

Together, we can care for the Earthโ€”not just today, but every day.
