On 2nd March 2024, we participated in the Chimvu River Rehabilitation Initiative organized by the Green Canopy Revolution in collaboration with Thyolo District Council.
The event took place at Kambuwa Village, about 15 kilometers from MUST campus. During the event,
Utilizing GIS, we highlighted changes in land use land cover (LULC) from 2017-2023. Noteworthy alterations include an increase in farmland from 50.95 km² to 51.09 km², built area expanding from 11.71 km² to 16.97 km², a reduction in rangeland from 14.46 km² to 9.12 km², and forest land reduced from 1.09 km² to 1.06 km².
The percentage change is approximately +0.31%, +44.79%, -37.03% and 2.75% respectively. The area has lost 10.18 km² of it's vegetation to settlements and farms, representing -34.53% hence posing a threat to surface water systems and it's biodiversity.

Through this educational session, attendees gained insights into the current situation and explored strategies to address the environmental changes.

Notable figures present included Mrs. Miriam Yona (Deputy Director for Environmental Affairs), Mr. Evance Phiri (Director of Water and Sanitation), Mr. Pius Mtike (Coordinator for Green Canopy Revolution), and Rev. Fr. Damazio Ngoma (Parish Priest, Chingazi Parish).
