“Before, my children could not go to school because we spent most of our time doing piecework just to survive. Today, life has changed.” Lemita Majowa

From harvesting less than 20 bags of maize to over 60 bags, Lemita’s story is a powerful testimony of resilience, hard work and the impact of Village Savings and Loans (VSL).

Through the Katanda VSL group supported by CARD, Lemita has managed to buy cattle, a motorbike, a plough and farming equipment that have transformed her family’s livelihood. Most importantly, her children are now back in school and her family has hope for a better future.

Together with 18 members, the group invested in rice farming as off takers and generated millions in profits, helping members improve their homes, farming and businesses.

With support from Jersey Overseas Aid and Scottish International Aid Fund through Trocaire and in partnership with Civil Society Network on Climate Change - Cisonecc and ICRAF, the project is strengthening livelihoods while protecting the Lake Chilwa ecosystem.

A few years ago, Beatrice Nikisi’s life was full of uncertainty.

As a mother of six from GVH Mmima in TA Chamba, Machinga District, she struggled every day to provide food for her family and keep her children in school. She survived through piece work, doing whatever she could to make ends meet.

“Life was very difficult,” she remembers. “Supporting my children, especially the one at secondary school, was a huge challenge.”

But today, Beatrice’s home tells a different story. Her yard is now surrounded by healthy crops, goats and beehives a sign of how much her life has changed through the Community-Led Planning and Management for Biodiversity Protection and Resilient Communities Project.

Beatrice first received five goats through the project’s pass-on initiative. With the skills she gained in goat management and agroecology, the goats multiplied to 12. She later passed on five goats to another participant and still remains with seven goats.

She also sold one goat for MK120,000.
The project further introduced her to beekeeping. Out of her five beehives, three have already been colonised and from her first honey harvest, she earned MK100,000.

“I used the money to buy school uniforms and other school necessities for my children,” she says proudly.

Today, she grows more than 11 different crops around her home, ensuring food is always available throughout the year.

“I no longer buy food. I just hear people saying food is expensive,” she says with a smile.

Beyond improving livelihoods, the project is also helping communities protect the Lake Chilwa Basin. Beatrice is now part of the Mmima Village Natural Resources Committee, where community members are working together to conserve the environment for future generations.

“CARD, Trocaire and SCIAF, thank you so much. God bless you. You have transformed my life.”
With support from Jersey Overseas Aid and SCIAF through Trócaire and in partnership with CISONECC and ICRAF, the project is empowering communities while protecting the Lake Chilwa ecosystem.

This week, we welcomed Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB) Program Officer Silantoi Kisoso and Presbyterian World Service & Development (PWS&D) Program Coordinator Kristen Winters to Balaka District to appreciate the impact of the Enhancing Climate Resilience for Improved Income and Food Security (ECRIF) Project.
As we moved from one community to another, listening to people’s experiences and visiting their fields, one thing stood out clearly lives are changing.

From goat pass-on initiatives and Village Savings and Loans groups to irrigation farming, beekeeping, manure making and post-harvest handling, communities are working hard to build better and more resilient futures for their families.

We also met farmers who have secured markets for their sorghum through contracts with the Chibuku Producing Group, creating new income opportunities for households in Balaka.

One participant, Geoffrey Manda, shared:
“For me, CARD means having food, shelter, money and healthy living. I am expecting to make over MK8 million from my sorghum sales and I am also participating in irrigation farming.”

We are implementing the project with funding from Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB) through Presbyterian World Service & Development (PWS&D).

This week, we conducted a technical field visit in Neno District as part of our ongoing three day technical meeting, monitoring interventions supported by Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe and Sand Dams Worldwide.

From irrigation schemes covering eight hectares in Mapangali and Mangwanyani to the construction of three sand dams, communities are now accessing water more easily and strengthening their food security.

“We will use the solar pumps to irrigate our fields and we will combat hunger.” – Group Village Headman Felemu.

“With the coming of the sand dams, water challenges have reduced and waterborne diseases are now issues of the past.” – Jellisa Paul.

As teams reflect on progress across all districts, these real-life experiences that remind us why our work matters building resilience, restoring dignity and bringing hope closer to communities.
