New Residential Home for Older Persons in Malawi

The Malawi Network Of Older Persons' Organizations (MANEPO) has completed construction of Malawi’s top-notch residential home for older persons in Mapanga, Blantyre.

The facility provides a safe, comfortable and dignified environment where older persons can access professional care, physiotherapy, psychosocial support, nutritious meals, recreation and companionship. It also offers day-care services for older persons.

The residential home will operate on a fee-paying basis, with MANEPO committed to keeping the charges as affordable as possible so that more older persons and families can benefit.

This milestone reflects MANEPO’s commitment to promoting dignity, well-being and active ageing for older persons in Malawi.

Malawi Network Of Older Persons' Organizations (MANEPO) is deeply saddened by the tragic killing of three older persons in Mchelera Community, Mzimba District, following unlawful accusations of witchcraft and a so-called cleansing ritual that resulted in their deaths.

We strongly condemn this horrific act and call on authorities to carry out a swift and thorough investigation and ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and stand in solidarity with the Mchelera community in their pursuit of truth and accountability.

The Malawi Network Of Older Persons' Organizations is pleased to announce the completion of a state -of-the-art Old Age Home located in Mapanga, Blantyre.

As we prepare for the official opening of the facility, we warmly invite 3–4 older persons to stay with us for 2–3 days and experience firsthand the comfort, care, and top-notch environment we proudly offer. This short stay is part of our "Come and See" experience.

The Government of Malawi has officially concluded the Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme in Blantyre District, implemented by MANEPO with support from the World Food Programme Malawi (WFP).

The programme reached 35,513 food-insecure households across eight Traditional Authorities through maize distributions and cash transfers between December 2025 and April 2026.

Over 5,300 metric tonnes of maize were distributed, while more than MWK 3.4 billion in cash support was disbursed to vulnerable families affected by high food prices and poor harvests.

Stakeholders commended the strong collaboration between MANEPO, Blantyre District Council, traditional leaders and partners in ensuring effective delivery of assistance.

The Japanese Ambassador to Malawi, H.E. Naito Yasushi, alongside officials from DODMA and WFP, has commended MANEPO for successful implementation of the 2025/2026 Emergency Lean Season Response Program in Blantyre.

During a monitoring visit to Lunzu Community Hall in TA Kapeni on Wednesday, the delegation witnessed ongoing food and cash distributions supporting vulnerable householdsβ€”ensuring no one is left behind.
