Pedalling to fundraise for Michiru Mountain Scouts

More than 100 cyclists took to the road on 6 June, 2026 with a shared mission: to help protect Michiru Mountain, Blantyre's last remaining green mountain and a vital environmental asset for the city.

The Cycle for Environment initiative, organized by the Malawi Environmental Endowment Trust (MEET) in partnership with CURE and a network of environmental NGOs, saw participants cycle from Blantyre to Mulanje Golf Club via the Thyolo Road.

Along the route, cyclists engaged communities and shared messages on environmental conservation and sustainable living.

Leading the pack was cycling champion Stewart Kambewa, who emphasized the broader significance of the event:

“This year's World Bicycle Day theme, Cycling for a Greener Future, is a testament to the role cycling plays in environmental conservation and sustainable development.”

Speaking at the closing ceremony, MEET Board Chairperson Lyson Kampira expressed gratitude to all cyclists, sponsors, and partners who supported the initiative and demonstrated their commitment to protecting Malawi's natural resources.

Delivering the keynote address, Daniel Dunga, Chief Executive Officer of Nico Asset Managers, reminded participants that:

“Planting a tree and refusing to destroy the environment remains one of the simplest yet most powerful investments any person can make.”

Representing the community scouts who are on the frontline of protecting Michiru Mountain, John Mailosi highlighted both the successes and challenges they face.

“Illegal activities such as deforestation, poaching, and sand mining have reduced significantly. However, our numbers have dropped from 320 scouts to just 125. We hope initiatives like this will improve our welfare and encourage more people to join the cause.”

MEET Coordinator Karen Price reaffirmed the organization's commitment to sustaining support for the scouts and strengthening partnerships to ensure the long-term protection of Michiru Mountain.

By the end of the fundraising ride, participants had raised MK9 million towards an initial target of MK40 million, with all proceeds going towards establishing a sustainable trust fund to support community scouts safeguarding the mountain.

CURE was proud to chair the organizing committee and lead publicity efforts for this inspiring network-wide initiative.

🌱 The journey to protect Michiru Mountain continues.

Malawi-Zambia Transfrontier Conservation Area: Connecting Nature Beyond Borders

As the world commemorated World Environment Day on June 5th, 2026, the Malawi-Zambia Transfrontier Conservation Area stands as a powerful example of how neighboring nations can work together to protect shared ecosystems and biodiversity.

Anchored on the principle that nature knows no borders, the initiative promotes the restoration and protection of ecological landscapes that sustain wildlife, communities, and economies across both countries.

A key focus is the preservation and strengthening of wildlife corridors that enable elephants and other species to move freely between habitats, access vital resources, and maintain healthy species populations.

These ecological linkages are increasingly important in the face of habitat fragmentation, climate change, and growing human pressures on natural resources.

By safeguarding shared frontier landscapes and promoting the "Room to Roam" approach, Malawi and Zambia are demonstrating that regional integration and cooperation are essential for building resilient ecosystems, conserving biodiversity, and securing a sustainable future for both people and nature.
