Mary's Meals Malawi

Mary's Meals Malawi We are providing daily school meals to more than 3,000,000 children in 16 countries 🌍💙 Our idea is a simple one that works.

We provide one daily meal in a place of education in order to attract chronically hungry children into a classroom, where they receive an education that can, in the future, be their ladder out of poverty. Mary's Meals began by feeding 200 children in Malawi. Today we feed more than one million hungry children every day. In addition to our school feeding projects, which are very much the core of ou

r work, Mary's Meals also supports a home for HIV-positive young adults - who were abandoned as children - in Romania. Our work is named after Mary, the mother of Jesus, who brought up her child in poverty. We consist of, we respect and we reach out to people of all faiths and none. The average worldwide cost for us to feed a child for a whole school year is just £15.90/€18.30/$21. Wherever possible, Mary's Meals uses locally grown food to support the local economy. We work hard to keep our running costs low and to ensure that at least 93 percent of donations go on our charitable work. This is only possible since most of our work is done by an army of volunteers. With 300 million chronically hungry children in the world, our work is just beginning.

🏁 Every lap can help feed a child.

This weekend, endurance racing driver Ferdinand Habsburg returns to the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans with a mission that goes beyond the track: raising funds for Mary’s Meals.

Through Race for Meals, supporters can sponsor every lap Ferdinand completes with €22 — enough to provide a child with daily school meals for an entire school year.
After helping provide meals for 1,317 children in 2025, Ferdinand is now aiming even higher — supporting more children and three schools in Malawi.

“I want to ensure that these children no longer have to worry about where their next meal is coming from,” says Ferdinand, who recently visited Mary’s Meals’ school feeding programme in Malawi.
Join the race to bring hope to the classroom — one lap, one meal, one child at a time.

We are excited to continue expanding the Mary’s Meals school feeding programme to more schools across Malawi, ensuring that even more children receive a nutritious daily meal in their place of learning.

Programme teams are already on the ground working closely with communities, conducting awareness sessions, establishing school feeding committees, carrying out cooking demonstrations, and supporting kitchen construction to ensure schools are ready to begin feeding.

We caught up with Peter Mchenga, Primary Education Advisor of Mpinje Zone in Thyolo district who was attending a community meeting, where he shared his thoughts on the expansion of the school feeding programme. "The expansion of the school feeding programme is a significant step towards improving education outcomes in our zone. If Mary’s Meals has assisted us with the school feeding programme, we as educators also need to take responsibility to ensure its success on the ground so that learners are more motivated to attend classes and participate in learning to a gain better education.”

As we continue to reach more children, we are helping create environments where children can thrive, communities can grow stronger, and every child has the opportunity for a better future.

Every year on 28th May, the world commemorates World Hunger Day. Mary's Meals Malawi stands in solidarity with millions of people around the world who still face the daily reality of hunger. 🌍💔

For millions of families, not knowing where the next meal will come from is a daily reality. Children are especially vulnerable, as hunger can make it difficult to concentrate in school, grow properly, and reach their full potential.

Mary’s Meals sets up school feeding programmes in areas where hunger and poverty often create barriers to learning. For more than two decades, our school feeding programmes have been generating real and measurable change in communities experiencing food insecurity, supporting a generation of children to thrive in education and build a brighter future.

Through school feeding programmes, we are hoping to bring change to the millions of children around the world —one meal, one child, one school at a time. Let’s continue working together to end hunger and build a world where no child is left behind. 💛

DID YOU KNOW? 💙🩷🤍

Mary’s Meals porridge packaging is colour-coded using 💙Blue, 🤍 white, and 🩷pink bags to help volunteers, teachers and staff easily identify different batches of porridge when supplies arrive at schools.

These colours help volunteers, teachers and staff quickly identify different porridge batches when supplies arrive. This simple system plays an important role in stock management by helping schools use older batches first, reducing the risk of spoilage and keeping meals safe, and nutritious for consumption.

Details like these can make a big difference in delivering fresh school meals effectively every day.

Today at Mary’s Meals Malawi, we celebrated Africa Day by embracing the rich cultures, traditions, and diversity that make our continent so special. Through the school feeding programme, we continue to stand alongside communities and support children with the opportunity to access education and a brighter future.

As we celebrate Africa, we also celebrate the hope, resilience, and potential found in every child and community we serve.
Happy Africa Day from all of us at Mary’s Meals Malawi!

At Mary’s Meals Malawi, we are committed to ensuring that children can attend school, stay focused in class, and dream beyond hunger. Luciano Ngiriki is head teacher at Namingwere Primary. He explained that most children in the area were forced to work rather than go to school. Those that did attend could not concentrate because they were too hungry.

That’s why the first day of school feeding at the school was one of celebration, joy, and smiles. Not only were the children receiving a nutritious school meal, but the community was resolute that education is the key to unlocking a better future for the village.
“The start of the Mary’s Meals school feeding programme at our school has attracted so many learners and I am sure if other children hear that the pupils were eating porridge, we are going to have more learners in their large numbers, so it is going to improve the attendance and enrolment, and they will be able to be active in class.”

Just MK43,708.92 provides a child with daily meals for an entire school year. Mary’s Meals is now reaching more than 3 million children globally with a nutritious daily meal in their place of education. While we're proud of this milestone, there are millions more children who are still hungry and out of school. Join us in the fight to end child hunger. Be part of this journey of hope. 💙

Hope grows in many ways, through kindness, generosity, encouragement, and community. 🌱

This week, our Youth Ambassadors continue sharing stories through the Seeds of Hope Campaign, highlighting the everyday moments and people that inspire hope in their lives and communities.

Youth Ambassador Bayethe Phiri defines a Seed of Hope as the small acts of care and compassion that can grow into lasting change for individuals and communities.
