Today, as the world marks the Sixteen Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Executive Director of Scar of Life Youth Organization, Valentino Molosen, underscores the urgent need to confront all forms of violence affecting women and girls.

He draws attention to the realities many women still face, stressing:
“In many communities, women who step into leadership or challenge restrictive norms meet not only direct violence, but also coordinated, silent pressure designed to intimidate them and push them back into silence. These actions are rooted in harmful gender norms that undermine safety, dignity, and progress for everyone. As we observe these 16 Days of Activism, we must recognise these patterns, stand with survivors, and work collectively to build communities where women and girls can live, lead, and thrive without fear. Our goal is not limited to supporting small-scale participation—women deserve full opportunity in education, enterprise, and leadership.”

Scar of Life Youth Organization stands with the global movement in demanding safer, more inclusive communities where every woman and girl can reach her full potential.

Meanwhile, the UNIMA Theatre Festival, now in its third edition, kicked off on Friday and ended yesterday. The festival featured a wide range of performances, including theatre, dance, poetry, visual arts and music.

Day one showcased acts from the UNIMA Drum Ensemble, Ngwenyama Dance Troupe, and Chanco Travelling Theatre.

The second day included performances by poet Yona Mlakutali, the Malawi National Dance Troupe, and Scar of Life, which premiered a new play titled Family Tree.

The play, written by Kwacha Zamba and directed by Valentino Moloseni, explores the impact of harmful cultural practices, particularly chokolo (wife inheritance).

Moloseni said the team was encouraged by the reception:

“It was a good outing for us since we also premiered a new play. The festival has potential to grow.”

UNIMA’s Department of Arts lecturer James Thole, who also choreographs for the Malawi National Dance Troupe, described the festival as impressive and praised the quality of performances.
