"Balaka Rises Up and Take Action for HIV Prevention"

Positive Steps Malawi is thrilled to implement the BARUTAH Project. Leveraging South-to-South learning, we're developing a locally owned Theory of Change (ToC) Map for Balaka District.

This ToC Map is designed to identify key challenges and facilitators, guide community-focused strategies, and ensure data-driven monitoring for adaptive management.

We're partnering with communities and policymakers to make sure our efforts are contextually relevant and deliver a lasting impact.

We're not just running a program. we're creating a validated, community-engineered framework for effective HIV prevention policy and action in Balaka!

A Cry for Help from Balaka and Machinga Districts

We’ve seen a heart-wrenching reality in Balaka and Machinga Districts. Through our work with PEPFAR, we've found that due to severe poverty, many young women are forced into s*x work, leaving them vulnerable to gender-based violence and a silent epidemic of mental health issues.

But they've also told us exactly what they need: an opportunity. These women aren't just asking for handouts; they're asking for a chance at a sustainable future through business training and startup capital.

Currently, no program in these districts offers this kind of direct, empowering support. This isn't just a gap; it's a call to action.

Help us change this story. We are looking for partners and supporters to fund our project, "A Path to Autonomy and Resilience," which will provide training on health and safety, and most importantly the startup funds these women need to build their own businesses.

Will you help us bridge this gap and create a path to dignity and independence.

"THE IMPACT OF COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT"

We are thrilled to see the impact of our community empowerment and livelihood initiative in action!

A Huge round of applause to the Kapalamula Support Group for their hard work and dedication to adopting zero tillage farming practices and producing their organic fertilizer.

Our field officers recently conducted a training on organic fertilizer production and the results are already showing. Despite the challenges posed by the fall army worms, the group is working tirelessly to address the issue.

We are grateful for the support of the Milimo Local Capacity building project which enabled us to build our capacity for the fertilizer production. Thank you CRECCOM for partnering with us to empower communities!

keep up the fantastic work, Kapalamula Support Group!

RISE UP AND TAKE ACTION: !

Positive Steps Malawi has been actively engaged in implementing a PEPFAR-funded project aimed at enhancing community participation and action regarding HIV prevention, care and support. This initiative particularly focused on combating stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS within communities of T/A Nchinguza in Machinga District.

Through participatory approaches such as Comprehensive Community Score Card, the project has successfully involved local communities in identifying their specific health service delivery needs. Community members expressed significant concerns regarding the effectiveness of health services related to HIV/AIDS.

Key issues highlighted include.

1- Healthy Care worker residency.
A major challenge identified was that many community health care workers do not reside within their assigned areas. This lack of residency leads to poor service delivery as these workers are unable to engage effectively with the communities they serve.

2- Shortages of preventive Measures
The community also reported a critical shortage of preventive measures, particularly condoms. This scarcity contributes to the ongoing spread of HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), exacerbating public health challenges.

In response to these identified needs, the project introduced several strategies aimed at improving health outcomes in the area such as Chief Led Networks as shown in the pictures below, to facilitate the sourcing of condoms from Nayuchi and Namanja health centers. This approach leverages traditional leadership structures to enhance community mobilization and resource allocation. The approach supported 4 healthcare workers from Namanja Health Center to re-locate to their assigned areas. Despite these efforts, challenges remain in securing a consistent supply of condoms from the District Health Office. The project recognizes that without reliable access to preventive measures, efforts to curb the spread of HIV will be significantly hindered.

The implementation of this project has fostered greater community involvement in health initiatives and highlighted critical gaps in service delivery that need addressing. Moving forward it is essential for stakeholders to collaborate closely with local leaders and health authorities to ensure that resources are adequately supplied and that community health workers are supported in their roles.

By continuing to engage communities in dialogue about their needs and involving them in decision-making processes, Positive Steps Malawi is geared to create a sustainable model for HIV prevention and care that empowers individuals while reducing stigma associated with the disease.

EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES IN MACHINGA DISTRICT

We are excited to share the incredible progress being made in Machinga District, Particularly in T/A Nchinguza! Our recent initiatives under the Early Childhood Development Program (ECD) and local works have shown remarkable results in promoting community development and empowerment.

Thanks to our dedicated efforts and the support from Milimo Local Capacity Building project implemented by CRECCOM, we have provided essential educational resources to the needy students at Nansato Primary School in the District. This initiative is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of our community members, who are increasingly engaging with development programs aimed at uplifting vulnerable populations.

The community giving training that was conducted has empowered residents to take charge of their own development. As a result, we are witnessing a growing commitment among locals to support education and other ideal services for children in their area. The response from T/A Nchinguza has been overwhelming positive, demonstrating that when communities come together with shared goals, significant change is possible.

"EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS ON HIV PREVENTION IN MALAWI"

Despite challenges with funding, We at Positive Steps Malawi are proud to announce the ongoing implementation of the Kabanza Health Initiative. The initiative focuses on establishing Kabanza Health Support groups aimed to assess and address HIV risk within our communities.

Our efforts have included Distribution of self-test kits for HIV, Provision of condoms to promote safe practices, and comprehensive health education sessions to Kabanza taxi drivers aimed at raising awareness and understanding of HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.

Recently, through the milimo local capacity building project, we facilitated a coordination meeting with local kabanza taxi drivers and all relevant stakeholders. This gathering featured insightful presentations from the District AIDS Committee Chair and Principals Health, Nutrition and AIDS Officer who shared vital information on key topics related to HIV.

We invite stakeholders interested in social response initiatives and health support programs to join us in this crucial mission.

Your support can help expand in our reach and enhance our impact in combating HIV in Malawi.

"SUPPORTING KAPALAMULA SUPPORT GROUP WITH ORGANIC FERTILIZER TRAINING"

We are excited to announce that Positive Steps Malawi is actively supporting the Kapalamula Support Group by providing training in organic fertilizer production. The initiative is designed to improve agricultural practices of our community members, particularly as they engage in Zero tillage farming on their maize field.

Despite our commitment to empowering vulnerable groups like Kapalamula Support Group, we face significant challenges due to limited funding. Our organization is implementing these vital livelihoods activities, ECD, Youth devel activities and Voluntary HIV Testing and counselling activities within our impact areas with minimal resources, which restricts our ability to reach even more communities in need. However, with additional funding and support, we could expand our efforts and support many more vulnerable groups across Malawi.

We believe that every small step counts towards building a resilient community!
If you would like to support our initiatives or learn more about how you can help, please reach out!

"HARNESSING THE POWER OF COMMUNITY GIVING THROUGH YOUTH CLUBS"

Positive Steps Malawi, with generous support from USAID through Milimo Local Capacity building implemented by CRECCOM, recently conducted a youth mentorship program at Mseche Primary School in Balaka District. This initiative aimed to empower young individuals in community giving through mentorship and skills development.

To facilitate the impactful mentorship program, Positive Steps collaborated closely with the District Community Development Office.

One of the most inspiring outcomes of their community giving mentorship program was the active involvement of the youth club members. By the end of their training, these motivated young individuals decided to take action within their community. They collectively contributed efforts to purchase school uniform for three vulnerable learners at Mseche primary school. This act of kindness not only provided essential support to those in need but also fostered a sense of responsibility and community spirit among the youth.

The mentorship program exemplifies how collaborative efforts can lead to meaningful change in communities. Through initiatives like these, Positive Steps Malawi is making a significant impact on the lives of young people and vulnerable learners alike.

EMPOWERING LEARNERS THROUGH AGRICULTURE

We are thrilled share the incredible journey of Kapalamula Support group, which has taken a significant step towards empowering back to school learners in our community!

After being mentored by positive steps, the support group embarked on an inspiring initiative to cultivate Maize and groundnuts garden. This project not only aims to generate income but also serves as a vital source of social support for students mobilized back to school through this support group's back to school campaign.

"Maize is a staple crop in Malawi and holds a greater potential for economic growth. By cultivating this crop, we are not just growing food; we are sowing seeds of hope and opportunity for our youth." Said Ellen Chikadza (support group Chair). She added that the income generated from the garden will directly contribute to providing essential resources such as school supplies, unforms and other educational materials needed for learners who may otherwise struggle to return to school.

Since the opening of Malawi's Educational calendar on 16th September this year, the group has managed to support two (2) male students and three (3) female students back to school.

We invite everyone to follow our page and stay tuned for more updates on this journey towards making education accessible for all.

EMPOWERING OUR YOUTH CLUBS

We Recently conducted a follow up on our resource mobilization training with the newly revamped Nkundi youth club in Balaka District, Mlandula Village, STA Toleza. were discussions enlightened some key takeaways such as community support challenges, Resource limitations and a call to action.

Participants highlighted that poor community support stems from weak leadership and coordination within the community. "This lack of strong guidance hinders our collective effort to drive positive change." said Limbani Saukira, former chairperson of Nkundi Youth Club. The group identified a significant gap in resources necessary to implement vital social support initiatives. He added that without adequate funding and materials, their ability to make a meaningful impact is severely restricted.

It is clear that strengthening community leadership and enhancing coordination are essential steps towards fostering a supportive environment for our youth. we must work together to mobilize resources effectively and create sustainable solutions for our community.

Let's unite our efforts to build a stronger foundation for our youth clubs and ensure that every voice is head! together, we can overcome these challenges and pave the way for brighter future!

Positive Steps is more excited with Malawi's support through Milimo local capacity building project implemented by CRECCOM. Your support is alleviating our work towards achieving our mandate.
