Reefscapers Coral Reef Restoration & Marine Environmental Consultancy, established in the Maldives in the year 20

Reefscapers is an independent marine consultancy company, established in Malé, Maldives in the year 2000. We are a qualified team of Maldivian and international marine biologists, working throughout the country’s resort hotels and local islands. Reefscapers develops solutions to many environmental challenges, from beach erosion and waste disposal, to coral reef propagation and aquaculture. We carr

y out surveys and feasibility studies to write detailed proposals for practical engineering solutions. We are available for international consultancy, and projects or long-term research contracts anywhere in the Maldives.

🐬🚁 What can a drone tell us about dolphins that a boat can’t?

By taking to the skies, we can observe dolphin groups from above with minimal disturbance, giving us a unique perspective on their behaviour and movements.

Drone surveys help us estimate group sizes, identify mother-calf pairs, document social interactions, and monitor behaviours such as travelling, resting, and feeding. The aerial view also allows us to collect more accurate data than would often be possible from a vessel alone.

But drones are only part of the story. To identify individual dolphins, we still need to photograph them from the boat, capturing the unique nicks, scars, and markings on their dorsal fins. By combining aerial observations with photo-identification, we can better understand population size, site fidelity, and the lives of individual dolphins that call the Maldives home.

🐢 Happy World Sea Turtle Day! 🌊

Today we’re celebrating some of the ocean’s most remarkable travellers.

At our rehabilitation centre, the species we encounter most often is the Olive Ridley sea turtle. Unlike reef-associated species, Olive Ridleys spend much of their lives in the open ocean, making them especially vulnerable to entanglement in ghost nets and other marine debris. In fact, many of the Olive Ridleys admitted to rehabilitation centres across the Maldives are suffering from injuries caused by discarded fishing gear and marine pollution.

Despite their challenges, these resilient turtles continue to inspire us every day. Every rescue, rehabilitation, and release is a reminder of why protecting our oceans matters.

This World Sea Turtle Day, let’s celebrate these incredible animals and do our part to keep their ocean home healthy

World Reef Awareness Day 🪸🩵

Hidden within every coral colony is a world of colour, life, and complexity. These tiny coral polyps are the architects of reefs that support thousands of marine species, protect coastlines, and sustain communities around the globe.

Yet reefs face increasing pressures from climate change, pollution, and habitat loss.

By protecting coral reefs, we protect one of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth.

Every reef matters. Every action counts.

Every coral frame added to the reef is another step towards restoring a thriving underwater ecosystem. 🌊🪸

At Reefscapers, our team is constantly building new coral frames, transplanting resilient coral fragments, and monitoring reef health to track growth, biodiversity, and recovery over time. From fish populations to coral survival rates, every survey helps us better understand and protect these fragile ecosystems for the future.

What starts as a simple metal frame can become a living reef filled with life. 🐠✨

Sea turtles navigate thousands of kilometres of ocean…
but sometimes a single piece of discarded fishing gear changes everything.

This coming week, we’ll be sharing more about turtle conservation and the work being done at Reefscapers to help injured and entangled turtles in the Maldives — including a conversation with our turtle veterinarian, Tagua! 🐢🩺

Stay tuned.
