Coral Reef Restoration & Marine Environmental Consultancy, established in the Maldives in the year 20

Reefscapers is an independent marine consultancy company, established in Malé, Maldives in the year 2000. We are a qualified team of Maldivian and international marine biologists, working throughout the country’s resort hotels and local islands. Reefscapers develops solutions to many environmental challenges, from beach erosion and waste disposal, to coral reef propagation and aquaculture. We carry out surveys and feasibility studies to write detailed proposals for practical engineering solutions. We are available for international consultancy, and projects or long-term research contracts anywhere in the Maldives.

🐟 From fingerling to plate.

How can aquaculture contribute to more sustainable seafood production in the Maldives?

Our brown-marbled grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus) project explores the process from raising juvenile fish and developing husbandry techniques to supplying grouper to resort kitchens.

Through controlled rearing systems, careful feeding and daily monitoring, the team is building practical knowledge of grouper growth and aquaculture in a Maldivian setting.

By developing local expertise through our apprenticeship program and exploring alternative sources of seafood, the project aims to help ease pressure on wild grouper populations while supporting a more sustainable approach to seafood production.

🌊 Happy World Animal Day! 🐢🐬🐠🦈

At Reefscapers, our work goes beyond coral restoration. We rescue and rehabilitate sea turtles, identify and monitor dolphins, breed Maldivian clownfish, raise groupers through sustainable aquaculture, and study shark–fisher interactions.

Today, we’re celebrating the animals at the heart of our work - and the research, conservation and care that helps protect them. 💙

Earlier this month, Reefscapers had the wonderful opportunity to be part of the inaugural Maldives Junior Lifeguard Programme (MJLP) sessions in Thulusdhoo and Fuvahmulah, joining this incredible initiative as the programme’s conservation partner.

We were honoured to meet and speak with the very first groups of Maldives’ new Junior Marine Lifeguards, sharing our passion for the ocean and helping them discover why protecting our marine environment is so important.

From the health of our coral reefs to the incredible marine life that calls the Maldives home, we explored how even the smallest actions in our everyday lives can contribute to meaningful change for our ocean.

It was a privilege to be part of this inspiring programme and to help encourage the next generation of young ocean advocates, lifeguards and conservationists! 🌊

Celebrating World Dolphin Day with some of the dolphins we’ve been lucky enough to encounter across our Reefscapers sites. 🐬

From spinner and bottlenose dolphins to Risso’s dolphins and short-finned pilot whales, every sighting contributes to our growing cetacean dataset.

Through photo-ID and long-term monitoring, we’re building records of individual animals and helping us better understand the cetaceans that call the Maldives home.

Coral restoration isn’t as simple as it looks 👀

Yes, we can use coral frames to help restore reefs.
Yes, reefs can recover from bleaching.
Yes, coral spawning creates the next generation of reefs.

But there’s always more to the story.

Where we place our frames, how we monitor coral growth, when we observe spawning, and how we respond to bleaching all matter.

Because successful restoration isn’t just about putting corals back in the ocean, it’s about understanding the reef, monitoring change, and giving corals the best possible chance to thrive 🩵🪸
