Press Statement: Concerns regarding restrictions on civic space, press freedom and due process
Transparency Maldives expresses serious concern over the recent imprisonment of journalists, restrictions on media coverage, and limitations placed on peaceful assembly and civic expression.

These developments reflect a broader narrowing of civic space in the Maldives and risk creating a chilling effect on public participation and democratic freedoms.

We call on relevant authorities to uphold constitutional protections, ensure due process and fair trial guarantees, and respect the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and press freedom in line with the Constitution and international human rights obligations.

In systems where power is concentrated and accountability is weak, those already facing discrimination become more vulnerable to exploitation and coercion.

In commemoration of International Labour Day, we held a Migrant Workers’ Wellbeing Camp in Thilafushi on 01 May 2026, bringing essential services directly to migrant workers.

We thank all our partners and collaborators whose support made this initiative possible. The camp provided free health check-ups, legal advice, and multilingual awareness materials on labour rights and wellbeing, ensuring information was accessible to workers from diverse backgrounds.

We reaffirm our commitment to upholding the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of migrant workers, and to continuing collaborative efforts that promote safe, fair, and inclusive working and living conditions for all.

On this Labor Day, we celebrate the dignity of work and confront its exploitation.

Corruption isn’t always about money. It can be pressure for s*x or s*xual favors in exchange for jobs, promotions, or basic rights. This is s*xual corruption, and it thrives in silence. Work should never cost you your body, dignity, or boundaries.

As we honor workers today, let’s commit to recognizing, naming, and challenging all forms of corruption to ensure fair and safe workplaces.
