Transparency Maldives held a Youth Camp in R. Ungoofaaru from 18–20 August 2026, bringing together young people from the community for three days of learning, discussion, and reflection.

The camp explored topics including democracy, good governance, human rights, social accountability, career guidance, and mental health and wellbeing, supporting young people to strengthen their understanding of civic life, their rights, and their role in shaping their communities.

Transparency Maldives held a Vilunveri Psychosocial Support Programme on 17–18 August 2026 in R. Ungoofaaru, bringing together 24 stakeholders from the Island Council, WDC, education, justice and law enforcement, child protection, and local NGOs.

The training aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of mental health and psychosocial support, and build their capacity to support the psychosocial well-being of children and young people in their community.

Over two days, participants engaged in sessions and practical activities, walking away with increased knowledge, interpersonal skills, and more confidence applying what they learned in their own work and communities.

Resources lost to corruption have direct implications for the quality of healthcare, education, and social services, as well as for broader economic opportunities. is an important component of anti-corruption framework and is currently one of the least developed areas of implementation in the Maldives!

Without meaningful asset recovery, and without the political will to hold corrupt elite accountable, the public will continue to bear the cost of corruption.

We have submitted a letter outlining our concerns regarding the nomination of Abdul Aziz Jamal Aboobakuru based on his performance as the first Information Commissioner.

Public trust in and Information Commissioner's Office - Maldives has increased since then. We can't afford backsliding!

We also note with concern that the People's Majlis only allocated 6 hours for the public to send their comments. This is not enough time for the public to engage meaningfully in this process!

Over the past few weeks, Transparency Maldives conducted a series of awareness and outreach sessions on employment law and occupational health and safety rights for migrant workers, including employees of MAWC. An outreach event was also held in Hulhumalé to engage female migrant workers and provide information on their rights and available support services.

✨️ We thank all participants, facilitators, and partners for their engagement and contributions. Access to accurate information is essential for empowering migrant workers to understand and exercise their rights, seek support when needed, and promote safer and more dignified working and living conditions.

Over the last two days, Transparency Maldives joined the first-ever national Right to Information Symposium, organised by Information Commissioner's Office - Maldives.

A huge congratulations to ICO for bringing together government, Information Officers, Councils, civil society, media and RTI practitioners for such an important conversation! UNDP Maldives

Across the three panels we took part in, some key points we raised are:

🔹 Legislative changes that affect any right guaranteed to citizens by the Constitution, including the right to information, should be communicated to the public in clear and accessible language that enables meaningful public engagement and informed discourse on the implications of such changes.

🔹 Greater consideration must also be given to addressing tensions between competing rights - in this case, the right to information and the right to privacy - to ensure that hard-won freedoms and the positive democratic behavioural changes taking root within the community are not stifled.

🔹 Easing pressure on the reactive RTI system requires more consistent, proactive publication of information. Institutions must not regard the proactive disclosure requirements set by the law as the ceiling, but rather the floor.

🔹 Building on our work on business integrity of SOEs and RTI assessments, we also shared insights on current disclosure practices, existing gaps, and steps needed to strengthen governance and transparency.
