A devastating ten day stretch in the Maldives has left eight Bangladeshi migrant workers dead, triggering widespread anxiety among the diaspora and prompting swift demands for safety reforms from human rights groups.

Occurring between late July and early August, the fatalities impacted young to middle aged workers aged 21 to 45. While two workers perished in on-the-job incidents including a fatal accidental ingestion of paint thinner, others succumbed to severe health crises such as heart attacks and strokes. One case is being investigated as a suspected su***de.

Community members attribute the alarming rate of sudden medical emergencies to intense mental strain, unrelenting financial struggles, and isolation from home. Officials at the High Commission in Malé are presently organizing the return of the deceased to their families.

With over 220,000 documented and undocumented foreign laborers living in the island nation, Bangladeshis represent the largest portion of the migrant workforce.
