STATEMENT FROM THE MALDIVIAN NURSES ASSOCIATION
The Maldivian Nurses Association (MNA) is increasingly concerned by the growing practice of advertising nursing positions alongside unrelated non-nursing responsibilities under dual-role job titles.
This trend is particularly evident in organizations where healthcare is not the primary service provided. While the presence of health facility and healthcare personnel may be a requirement, nurses are often recruited to fulfill this obligation and subsequently assigned additional duties to fill staffing gaps in unrelated departments. Such arrangements fail to recognize the specialized nature of nursing practice and may place unreasonable expectations on nurses without fair compensation.
Nursing is a regulated profession with a defined scope of practice, professional standards, and accountability for the delivery of safe and effective healthcare. A nurse's role is not interchangeable with non-clinical positions, and nursing job descriptions exist to ensure patient safety, quality of care, and professional accountability.
MNA calls upon the Ministry of Health, employers, and human resource departments to review nursing job descriptions and workforce practices to ensure that nursing positions are not used to fill unrelated staffing shortages. Where additional responsibilities are required, they should be clearly defined, appropriately compensated, and should not compromise the nurse's professional responsibilities.
MNA further advocates for the establishment of a national minimum salary scale for nurses across all sectors, ensuring fair remuneration based on qualifications, registration, experience, and level of responsibility.
The nursing profession must be respected, protected, and utilized in a manner that upholds professional standards and safeguards the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve.
