Meet Maania Shareef, Registered Nurse.
Maani has worked in the Rapid Response Team (RRT) as a sample collector and vaccinator during COVID-19, then joined IGMH and is currently serving at L. Maabaidhoo Health Center. Besides this, Maani is also the Assistant Secretary of the Maldivian Nurses Association (MNA).
Maani became a nurse because she wanted to be a source of comfort and hope for people during the hardest moments of their lives. Caring for someone in their most vulnerable state gave Maani’s life a deeper purpose.
What Maani loves most about nursing is the human connection. A smile, a reassuring word, or simply being present for a patient often means more than medicine. Knowing Maani can bring comfort and strength to someone’s day is the most rewarding part of her profession.
One of the most memorable parts of Maani’s journey is seeing patients recover and leave with gratitude in their hearts. Watching someone walk out stronger after illness reminds Maani why nursing is more than a job, it is a calling. At the same time, there are moments when Maani knows she cannot save a patient, and all she can do is make dua for them. Those moments remind Maani of the limits of medicine and the importance of compassion, faith and humanity.
Long shifts, emotional situations and caring for critically ill patients have tested Maani in many ways, but they have also shaped her resilience, patience, and inner strength. A patient’s smile, a thank you from a family member or knowing she eased someone’s pain keeps Maani going.
Nursing has taught Maani to appreciate life more deeply and never take health, family, or time for granted. It has also shown Maani the incredible strength people carry within them even in their weakest moments. To Maani, compassion means treating every patient like family, listening without judgment and ensuring no one feels alone in their pain or fear.
To every nurse, Maani’s message is simple: your care, sacrifice and kindness matter more than you may ever realize. Nursing is not just a profession, it is the heart of healthcare.
