Building on earlier regional meetings in Saint Lucia, Palau, and Mauritius, bringing together experts from the Caribbean, Pacific, and Western Indian Ocean regions, MRR participated in the 1st Island Nations Global Synergy Meeting, hosted by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) in Tokyo, Japan.

The meeting aimed to strengthen shared understanding, human networks, and cooperation among SIDS regions, helping island nations work together to address common challenges such as rising sea levels, coastal erosion, overfishing, reef degradation, and increasingly intense weather events as well as advance sustainable development to comat these issues.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Sasakawa Peace Foundation for enabling this Dialogue, for welcoming us with their generous Japanese hospitality.

Maldives Resilient Reefs (MRR), alongside the Maldives’ Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy (MoCCEE) and Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI), are proud to announce the Laamu Mission Blue Hope Spot Grant 2026. 🐠 🪸

Through this, we are supporting the designation of five Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs) within Laamu as Protected and Conserved Areas (PCAs).

As part of this grant, we are excited to launch our Community Champions Programme, opening applications for individuals from Mundoo, Isdhoo, Maamendhoo, Fonadhoo, and Kunahandhoo to take part in a training programme in Gan, followed by paid community-based conservation work on their home islands. 🌊🌺

Note: Even if you’re not from these islands, we encourage individuals from other islands within the Laamu Hope Spot to apply if interested.

The Community Champions programme aims to empower youth through environmental training, conservation education, and community engagement.

We look forward to your applications! :https://forms.gle/tGwwXDhBny9d4r48A

As of 11 April 2026, NOAA Coral Reef Watch has placed the Maldives under a Coral Bleaching Alert Level: Watch, indicating potential bleaching with low likelihood.

However, forecasts show a significant escalation within the next 12 weeks, likely reaching Alert Level 1, where significant bleaching is likely.

⚠️ This is a critical window for action.

We must act now to reduce stress on coral reefs by:
• Stopping all dredging and reclamation until conditions return to normal
• Suspending sand pumping and beach replenishment activities
• Ensuring proper sewage treatment
• Acting responsibly in reef areas

With another bleaching risk now on the horizon, every action that reduces local stress on reefs can improve their chances of survival

Fish for Tomorrow is an initiative by Maldives Resilient Reefs promoting sustainable fishing practices, supporting local communities, and protecting vulnerable reef species, so that our oceans can continue to thrive.

Healthy reefs are the foundation of life in the Maldives, supporting food security, tourism, and coastal protection. The initiative encourages responsible food sourcing while strengthening collaboration between resorts and local communities.

Through programmes like Fish for Tomorrow, we are creating a future where fishing and conservation go hand in hand.

The Second Maldives Protected and Conserved Areas Forum 2026, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, OCPP, IUCN and MRR brought together PCA practitioners from across the Maldives and beyond for three days of sharing, learning, and collaboration! 🌊

Serving as a national gathering for individuals and institutions involved in the management and stewardship of Protected and Conserved Areas (PCAs), the forum created space to connect, exchange experiences, and strengthen conservation efforts across the Maldives. 🐠

As a key partner in delivering the forum through the Rapid Deployment Mechanism funded by the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, MRR supported the participation of PCA practitioners across the country and contributed to discussions on the Maldives 30x30 Roadmap, supporting national progress towards Target 3 of the KMGBF alongside the Ministry of Tourism and Environment. 🌱

We remain committed to continuing these conversations and working closely with communities and partners to protect and conserve our vital ecosystems. 🪸🐟🌊🙌🏽

We extend our sincere gratitude to the for enabling this dialogue, and to .ngo and for their warm hosting and generous Mauritian hospitality. 🌺

We look forward to continuing these conversations at the upcoming Island Nations Global Synergy Meeting in Tokyo this March, and to strengthening collaboration across island regions as we work collectively towards a healthier ocean and resilient communities. 🌊🏝️

We are thrilled to welcome Noku Maldives Resort to the circle. 🌱

With this step, they have pledged to protect at least 80% of their seagrass meadows and are committed to being a champion for seagrass across the Maldives.

Green sea turtles can eat up to 2 kg of seagrass a day. By protecting the seagrass meadow around their island, they can help save this endangered species. 🐢 🐠

Please join us in welcoming Rafha to the Maldives Resilient Reefs team as our new Projects Assistant! 🌊

Rafha holds a Bachelor’s in Tropical Environmental Biology and brings wide-ranging marine conservation experience across the Maldives, including white‑tailed tropicbird monitoring, sea turtle rescues and nest monitoring, photo‑ID, coral larval and frame restoration, and whale shark research.

A dedicated community educator, Rafha has led marine biology sessions in local schools to strengthen connections between island communities and ocean stewardship. On starting her role she says, “I’m most looking forward to working with the community — giving them agency in how the nature around them is protected, utilized, and managed.”

We’re excited to have her expertise and passion on board!
