It is completely unacceptable for Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) like Booking.com to undermine local travel businesses in the Maldives. Since when did Booking.com become a PR entity?

In many other countries, governments regulate OTAs strictly, ensuring they pay royalties and contribute fairly to the economy, rather than monopolizing the market and sidelining local travel agents. The Maldives must follow the same approach to safeguard our tourism industry and protect local travel agencies that play a crucial role in sustaining foreign currency flow (USD) within the country.

As ATA (Association of Travel Agents), we strongly oppose the unregulated dominance of OTAs. We urge authorities to implement policies that require OTAs to pay royalties and enforce regulations that prioritize local businesses to ensure a sustainable and fair travel ecosystem in the Maldives.

It’s time to take decisive action to protect our national interests, our economy, and our local tourism operators.
