On this year’s International Nurses Day theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies,” the MHPU reiterates its urgent call for safe staffing ratios, fair workloads, and stronger protections for nurses across the health system.
Unsafe staffing continues to fuel burnout, workplace hazards, and exhaustion among nurses, directly affecting both worker wellbeing and patient safety. Chronic understaffing has also resulted in excessive overtime (OT), long working hours, and inadequate rest, placing unsustainable physical and mental strain on nurses.
Nurses cannot continue to carry the burden of a strained health system through endless overtime and unsafe workloads. Ensuring safe staffing, fair compensation for OT, adequate rest, and healthy working conditions is essential to retaining skilled nurses and strengthening the healthcare system for the future.

This Mother’s Day, we honour the strength and sacrifices of mothers everywhere — especially mothers in healthcare, and mothers living through war, displacement, and humanitarian crises in Palestine, Sudan, Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, and other conflict-affected regions.

We also reaffirm our call for humane and supportive policies for working mothers.

We call for:

• Establishing state-owned childcare facilities in major hospitals.

• Reforming maternity policies to include fertility treatments, adoption, fostering, flexible return-to-work arrangements after childbirth, and humane provisions for mothers experiencing miscarriage, stillbirth, infant loss, or the loss of a child during maternity leave.

• Ensuring safe staffing ratios to reduce burnout among working mothers

• Implementing predictable duty rosters and limits on excessive overtime

Supporting mothers means building a healthcare system that values care, dignity, and wellbeing.

Healthcare workers are being pushed beyond safe limits — working long hours, six days a week, with inadequate rest. Burnout is a serious reality, causing physical and mental exhaustion. This not only harms workers, but also compromises the quality and safety of patient care. Fatigue increases the risk of errors, accidents, and preventable harm. We demand safe staffing ratios and adequate rest periods for all healthcare workers.

Occupational health and safety is crucial to protect healthcare workers and ensure quality services. The Occupational Health and Safety Act has been in effect for over a year; however, employers have failed to implement it. We demand the full implementation of the OSH Act.
