The mangrove seeds from our “Mangroves in Space” mission have safely returned to Earth! 🚀🇲🇻

After orbiting the planet over 100 times aboard the International Space Station, the seeds from the payload safely returned to Earth along with ‘s Crew-10. Now, they may hold the keys to building more sustainable food systems for our planet.

The next phase has officially begun. Our Maldivian mangrove seeds are now undergoing extensive scientific analysis to see how their time in space has affected them, with a primary focus on Earth use cases. We’re turning spaceflight into knowledge that will serve both our home planet and future space missions.

A massive thank you to our collaborators and partners around the world who made this incredible mission possible. The mission continues as these vital studies are underway!

Maldives is reaching for the stars with our “Mangroves In Space” (MIS-01) initiative! 🚀🌿 We’re thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of Maldivian mangrove seeds – specifically Avicennia marina, locally known as “Baru Gass” – into space. These vital seeds, sourced with incredible support from the Ha. Dh. Kulhudhuffushi and N. Kendhikulhudhoo councils, represent our nation’s deep connection to coastal ecosystems and climate resilience. 🇲🇻

As part of a global effort led by , the MIS-01 project will study how these seeds respond to the extreme environment of space, including microgravity and radiation. 🔬✨ This groundbreaking research, launching via NASA’s CRS-11 mission on July 31, 2025 (Expedition 73), aims to unlock knowledge that can strengthen food security and sustainability for the Maldives and the world. 🌍

Upon returning to earth, MSRO will conduct extensive scientific analysis to understand how spaceflight has affected these samples, with a primary focus on Earth use cases. This mission will be the first of many under MSRO’s Mangroves in Space initiative. 🌱

Stay tuned for updates and launch livestreaming details! 🛰️

🇲🇻Maldivian Mangrove Seeds are Heading to the International Space Station! 🚀

MSRO is incredibly proud to announce our contribution to the groundbreaking Earth Seeds for Space payload, spearheaded by . This marks a monumental moment for the Maldives, as it’s the first time our nation has contributed to a payload heading to the ISS. Mangrove seeds sourced from the Maldives joins a collection of 11 unique payloads from different countries. 🌍🌱

The mission, set to launch on NASA’s Crew-11 on July 31, 2025, aims to enhance crop resilience, advance seed preservation techniques, and drive agricultural innovations that will benefit both long-duration space missions and farming here on Earth. It also explores the potential of previously unexamined species for future space agriculture, fostering sustainable human exploration, nutritional diversity, and cultural representation in space.
We are thrilled to be part of an incredible array of international partners, including 🇦🇷Argentina (CONAE), 🇧🇷Brazil (Embrapa) + 🇺🇸USA (University of Florida), 🇨🇷Costa Rica (UCR), 🇬🇹Guatemala (SENACYT), 🇮🇳India (Protoplanet), 🇳🇬Nigeria (NASRDA), Karman Project: 🇵🇰Pakistan, 🇦🇲Armenia, 🇪🇬Egypt, 🇳🇬Nigeria. This mission is a testament to what emerging space nations can achieve when we collaborate for the advancement of science and the benefit of humanity.

Stay tuned as we share more updates on this historic journey for the Maldives and for global space agriculture! 🛰️🌿
