Strengthening Community Health Nursing in the Maldives 🇲🇻
Community Nurse Volunteers (CNV) was pleased to be invited by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) for a valuable discussion on Primary Health Care revitalization and Community Health Nursing.
We sincerely thank Mr. Ibrahim Nishan Ahmed, Director General of Public Health, HPA, and Ms. Fathimath Thohira, Director, HPA, for giving CNV the opportunity to share our vision, experiences, thoughts and ideas on strengthening community-based healthcare.
Our discussion explored:
• Formal recognition of Community Health Nursing roles and specialization within PHC
• Recognition and incentives for nurses already undertaking community health roles across the islands
• Home-based care and home-visit incentives
• Multidisciplinary community teams involving Community Health Nurses, Public Health Officers, Community Care Workers and other relevant professionals
• A healthcare focal point at grassroots level for individualized and family-focused care
• Moving beyond procedure-based visits towards holistic assessment, prevention, education and follow-up
• The potential role of Urban Care Centres in coordinating community care
• Stronger hospital → community → home referral pathways and continuity of care
• NCD prevention, screening, health promotion and health literacy
CNV envisions a system where care does not end at the hospital or clinic door, but continues into our communities and homes — connecting individuals and families with the healthcare system throughout their care journey.
We look forward to continued dialogue and collaboration with HPA towards strengthening Community Health Nursing in the Maldives.
