Alongside the one for the general public, we also had a social accountability workshop for institutions, carried out in collaboration with Transparency Maldives Maldives Local Councils' Association Information Commissioner's Office and with the support of Addu City Council .

Participants engaged in community scorecard and participatory budgeting exercises, alongside an RTI session specifically designed to improve institutional capacity in responding to RTI requests. Participants also critiqued the outputs of the previous workshop and explored barriers to proper service delivery by the select institutions.

This project is being carried out with the support of Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).

We had our Social Accountability Workshop for the community last week, carried out in collaboration with Transparency Maldives Maldives Local Councils' Association Information Commissioner's Office and with the support of Addu City Council .

Participants were introduced to tools like Right to Information (RTI), participatory budgeting, and community scorecards, with exercises carried out to familiarise them with how these tools are used to hold elected officials accountable and how they can help develop the community in ways that most represent public needs. We are working on how these hypothetical exercises can be institutionalised at a local level to involve the community in decision-making and better inform public spending.

This project is being carried out with the support of Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).

We’re collaborating with Transparency Maldives Maldives Local Councils' Association and Information Commissioner's Office to once again carry out a social accountability workshop for people of all ages. Alongside RTIs, this time we’ll specifically be exploring tools such as participatory budgeting and scorecards.

The outputs from this workshop will complement what we have gathered from the previous ones, and will make up part of the recommendations and comments we submit to the council to be reflected in Addu’s five year Development Plan being devised.

As part of our “Au(?) Visumakah” project, we held a Multi-Stakeholder Sustainability Planning Workshop last Saturday.

Participants from different demographics and backgrounds engaged in problem identification exercises through a productive inter-generational dialogue. In groups they ran comprehensive analyses of select issues with guidance from our facilitators Inaz and Sara Naseem . These broadly included centralisation efforts, lack of third spaces, and unsustainable development due to ecologically-destructive acts. Participants explored the social, economic, ecological, cultural, and governance-related dimensions of issues, using concepts of intersectionality and sustainability.

CDE Consulting also presented a brief summary of Addu’s Development Plan for the period 2026-2031. The extremely quality inputs collected at the workshop will form part of our recommendations that will be presented to the council at the end of this project.

Everything around us is shaped through underlying systems of power and taken-for-granted assumptions that are produced and reproduced by the community. This two-day workshop was our attempt to interrogate the omnipresent ideas of coloniality and introduce young people to decolonial-thinking, with an emphasis on the pluriverse, alternate ways of seeing the world, and their role in knowledge production.

Many thanks to Sara Naseem for the facilitation and for all the help in the development and ex*****on of this workshop. There is definitely a lot more to unpack here and we hope to have similar workshops in the future.

This project is being carried out with the support of Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).

Day 3 of the “Sathuhatti: Laamu Atoll” workshop aided participants in better understanding issues in the community and identifying their root causes. Participants devised potential solutions and policy recommendations for specific issues they thought should receive the greatest priority in being solved. They were also introduced to social accountability tools and participated in discussions about environmental advocacy, before being given the opportunity to chat with members of the L. Fonadhoo Council and WDC in a co-creation of solutions activity.

Day 2 of the “Sathuhatti: Laamu Atoll” workshop introduced participants to evolving definitions of sustainability and intersectionality, with case studies of how these concepts apply in the context of Gan and Fonadhoo. Maldives Resilient Reefs also facilitated a well-enjoyed session on conservation, climate change, and the ocean. Additionally, participants went on to identify community concerns and examples of unsustainable practices, reflecting on their observations from the field visits.
