FoodWise was founded at the end of 2018 by a group of friends tired of getting the same response when asking hotels, supermarkets or restaurants “Why don’t you give away your unsold food?”.
As liability was the first concern of companies we spoke to, we teamed up with pro bono lawyers and food safety experts to
develop a secure solution for Donors to give away their surplus food without fear of liability. FoodWise was born when we got our first “YES!” from a hotel. After organising forums to spread the success of the pilot project, many more companies followed.
FoodWise is today a leading food waste solution in Mauritius with a mission to ensure that every food produced is never wasted but reused in an impactful way. Every day, we collect unsold food from dozens of donors such as hotels, wholesalers, producers, supermarkets, restaurants, etc, and deliver it to charities that help people in need.
Today, our Team of passionate food waste warriors runs the food redistribution activity from our office in Moka and we operate all over the country. With our network of partners, we manage to collect food from companies all over the island and deliver it to the most underprivileged communities in remote areas.
Every member of FoodWise Family wakes up every day wanting to change our country for the better. We never understood the world collaboration better than when we joined FoodWise, as we live it everyday. Creating a sustainable and solidarity-based food culture is a huge challenge and without our devoted colleagues but most importantly our value-minded partners, the spreading of our message would not be possible. We believe in offering solutions to companies, charities and consumers in such a way that it benefits everyone as well as the planet.
FoodWise will continue to work to provide solutions that enable every Mauritian, every company, every institution, every charity, to play a part in the fight against food waste and food insecurity while finding a benefit in doing so.
