Gender Links Mauritius

Gender Links Mauritius Gender Links (GL) Mauritius is the office branch of GL headquartered in Johannesburg lobbying for gender equality.

https://youtube.com/?si=V5h4pvuR8O-OAUOM Formed in March 2001, Gender Links (GL) is a Southern African NGO, headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa that promotes gender equality and justice across the fifteen countries of the region. Gender Links is a Southern African NGO that is committed to a region in which women and men are able to participate equally in all aspects

of public and private life. VISION
Gender Links (GL) is committed to a region in which women and men are able to participate equally in all aspects of public and private life in accordance with the provisions of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Protocol on Gender and Development. MISSION
GL achieves its vision by coordinating the work of the Southern African Gender Protocol Alliance formed around the sub-regional instrument that brings together all key African and global commitments for achieving gender equality by 2015, also the target date for MDG 3 (gender equality). The annual barometer measures progress made by governments against the 28 targets of the Protocol. GL has integrated these targets into its three core, closely linked programme areas: the media, governance and gender justice, and its cross cutting programmes: gender, climate change, and economic justice. Working with partners at local, national, regional and international level, GL aims to:

Promote gender equality in and through the media and in all areas of governance. Develop policies and conduct effective campaigns for ending gender violence, HIV and AIDS, as well as promoting economic and climate justice. Build the capacity of women and men to engage critically in democratic processes that advance equality and justice.

On 28 May 2026, Gender Links Mauritius proudly participated in the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP), the world’s largest and longest-running research initiative on gender representation in the news.

Conducted simultaneously across 16 SADC countries, the monitoring exercise provides valuable insights into how women and men are represented and portrayed in the media.

In Mauritius, our dedicated team monitored a total of 88 news items across 13 media outlets, covering print, radio, television and online platforms. This important exercise contributes to regional and global efforts to track progress towards gender equality in and through the media.

A sincere thank you to all the volunteers, media monitors, and partners who made this initiative possible. Together, we continue to advocate for more inclusive, balanced, and gender-responsive media.

HIV is not just about “risk.”
It’s about power, access, silence — and who gets left behind.

In Mauritius, cases are rising.
Women are more vulnerable.
Young people are exposed — but not always educated.

We have the tools: PREP. PEP. Testing. Treatment.
So what’s missing?

➡️ Honest conversations
➡️ Access without barriers
➡️ Education that actually reaches people
➡️ Collective responsibility

“HIV is not contagious — it is transmissible.”
People live, love, work, and build families with HIV.

The real fight?
Stigma. Silence. Inequality.

We don’t end AIDS alone.
We do it together.

We talked about the alarming rise of GBV, the lack of funds and the NO political will to bring about change on gender pay gap, unpaid care work, gender inequalities. We reiterated the importance of SRHR being mainstreamed in all schools.

A very constructive and engaging meeting with Mrs. Woon Young Hong, Deputy Regional Director at UNFPA East and Southern Africa Regional Office and Josiane Yaguibou, UNFPA Country Director for Mauritius and Seychelles.

We had rich discussions on gender-based violence and persistent gender inequalities across the region, while also exploring the importance of shaping new narratives that challenge harmful norms and drive meaningful, lasting change.

These conversations are critical as we continue to strengthen partnerships and collective action towards a more just, inclusive and gender-equal society.
