Compound climate extremes are on the rise. Heatwaves and floods are increasingly striking in rapid succession or at the same time – with increased impacts on cities, systems, and communities.

This study from the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance explores this compound risk, which is on the rise driven by climate change and urbanisation.

The study shows how these events overwhelm infrastructure and deepen inequalities – as has been witnessed from Hurricane Beryl in Texas and Pakistan’s 2022 floods.

Resilience solutions include using green urban spaces, bioswales, wetland restoration, and community-led adaptation.

Compound risks need integrated, equity-focused action.
