This is a reminder that the health of our land is directly tied to our water security, our food systems, and our climate resilience.

Here in Mauritius, the built environment has a real role to play. Every building designed for rainwater harvesting, every permeable surface that lets water return to the soil instead of running off, and every green roof or landscaped space that reduces heat and conserves moisture is a small act of land stewardship.

As we work towards a more sustainable built environment, the GBCM - Green Building Council of Mauritius remains committed to promoting design and construction practices that protect our land and water resources, not just for today, but for generations to come.

๐ŸŒฑ Let's build with the land in mind, not against it.

Introducing a new awareness series exploring the truth behind green buildings and sustainable construction.

Across the world, many ideas circulate about what โ€œ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€โ€ really are - some accurate, and some misleading. Through this series, we will break down common myths and uncover the reality behind energy-efficient design, renewable energy integration, sustainable materials, and climate-resilient construction. From cost misconceptions to performance benefits, each post will help clarify how green buildings truly work and why they matter for our future.

"While some solutions may require higher upfront investment, many green building measures generate long-term savings through reduced energy and water consumption."

Many people believe that building green automatically means higher construction costs. This is one of the most common misconceptions about sustainable construction.

While some green technologies may have a higher upfront cost, green buildings are often more cost-effective in the long run. Features such as energy-efficient design, better insulation, solar energy systems, and water-saving technologies help reduce electricity and water bills over time. In many cases, these savings can offset the initial investment.

Furthermore, green buildings often have lower maintenance costs and provide healthier indoor environments, which can improve productivity and well-being.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What do you think? - Should we focus more on long-term savings rather than initial costs when it comes to construction?

๐Ÿ“ข Stay tuned as we separate myth from reality and explore how sustainable construction is shaping a healthier and more resilient world.

In case you missed it, we recently published our global sustainable finance taxonomy principles, developed with our global network of Green Building Councils and partners.

With more than 50 sustainable finance taxonomies now in use or in development worldwide, the question is are they helping direct capital to where it can make the biggest difference? Our seven principles offer a shared framework for what effective criteria look like for construction and real estate.

These principles are not abstract. There are examples from taxonomies around the world of how they can be successfully applied:

๐ŸŸข Social: Mexico and the EU require taxonomies to meet minimum social safeguards, and Brazil's includes a dedicated economic activity for new affordable housing.

๐ŸŸข Verifiable: South Africa's Green Finance Taxonomy requires self-reporting to be verified by a third party, or accepts green building certification as proof of compliance.

๐ŸŸข Understandable: Kenya's Green Finance Taxonomy includes an objective that explains the intent of the criteria and shows how to report against it, with reference to green building schemes, making it easier to work with the taxonomy.

These are real examples with real momentum, and there's still room for many more. Whether your country has a taxonomy, or you're still getting underway, your local Green Building Council can help you shape, apply or update your criteria.

As the world faces increasing challenges from climate change, pollution, and rising energy demands, the construction sector has a vital role to play in creating a more sustainable future.

Green building practices focus on designing, constructing, and operating buildings in ways that minimize environmental impact while improving energy efficiency. One of the most effective approaches is the integration of renewable energy sources into buildings. ๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ด, ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜ด๐˜บ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ด, and ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ด ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜จ๐˜บ can help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower greenhouse gas emissions. These technologies enable buildings to generate clean energy, reduce operating costs, and contribute to a healthier environment.

Green buildings also incorporate energy-efficient designs, sustainable materials, smart technologies, and effective energy management systems. Features such as natural lighting, improved insulation, rainwater harvesting, and energy storage solutions further enhance sustainability.

The adoption of renewable energy in the construction sector supports global efforts to achieve carbon neutrality and sustainable development. Through supportive policies, technological innovation, and increased public awareness, green building practices can transform the way we build and live.

In island environments like Mauritius, water isnโ€™t just a utility, itโ€™s a precious and sometimes limited resource. Green buildings recognize this by treating water efficiency as a core design priority, not an afterthought.

Water efficiency starts with simply using less:
โ–ช๏ธLow-flow taps and showerheads
Dual-flush toilets
Water-efficient appliances

These small interventions can reduce indoor water use by 30โ€“50% without affecting user experience.

With seasonal rainfall patterns, capturing rainwater is a smart strategy:
โ–ช๏ธRoof collection systems
Storage tanks for irrigation and non-potable uses
Integration into building design from the outset

This reduces reliance on mains supply and improves resilience during dry periods.

Green buildings increasingly reuse water from:
โ–ช๏ธSinks
Showers
Laundry

This treated greywater can be used for:
โ–ช๏ธIrrigation
Toilet flushing

Reducing overall water demand significantly, especially in residential and hospitality developments.

Outdoor water use is often overlooked but can be substantial:
โ–ช๏ธNative and drought-tolerant plants
Drip irrigation systems
Smart irrigation controls based on weather

In Mauritius, this is particularly relevant for large developments and resorts where landscaping is extensive.

๐Ÿ”‘ Water efficiency is about more than saving resources - itโ€™s about building resilience. For Mauritius, where climate variability is increasing, every drop saved today helps secure tomorrow.
