Did you know that every drop of rain falling on the land follows a path that eventually leads to a river, lagoon, or the ocean?

A watershed is the area of land that collects and channels rainwater towards a common water body. From mountain ridges to coastal ecosystems, watersheds connect landscapes, communities, and nature through the movement of water.

Through our Rivers Discovery series, explore how these natural systems shape our environment and discover why protecting watersheds is essential for clean water, healthy rivers, thriving biodiversity, and resilient coastal ecosystems.

Focused on the Jacotet River at Bel Ombre, this initiative promotes a ridge-to-reef approach to river restoration and ecosystem conservation in Mauritius.

This project is funded through the RECOS (Resilience of Indian Ocean Coastal Zones) project by the Commission de l'océan Indien - Indian Ocean Commission, AFD - Agence Française de Développement and Fonds Français pour l'Environnement Mondial (FFEM).

Launched in Mauritius in February 2026, AMÉO (Aires Marines Éducatives, Océan Indien) is a regional initiative led by the Office Français de la Biodiversité (OFB) that places young people at the heart of coral reef conservation.

AMÉO is a two-year project being implemented across the Indian Ocean in Réunion Island, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, and Madagascar, with Rodrigues set to join the initiative in 2027. Through this regional collaboration, the project promotes the exchange of experiences and best practices in environmental education and marine conservation while strengthening connections between young people across the region.

Currently implemented at Jean Eon RCA, Oasis de Paix (Père Henry Souchon), and Mon Progrès Roche Bois, the project engages more than 100 students in discovering, understanding, and protecting Mauritius' coastal and marine ecosystems.
During the first phase of the project. the Discovery Phase, students explored mangroves, wetlands, seagrass beds, and coral reefs through classroom activities, the Bis Lamer educational caravan, and immersive field experiences. These experiences enabled them to better understand the ecological importance of these ecosystems and the threats they face.

🌊Raise awareness and understanding of coral reef ecosystems;
🌊Support concrete conservation actions led by students; and
🌊Strengthen regional cooperation across the Indian Ocean.

Having successfully completed the Discovery Phase, the project has now entered its second phase, the "Take Action" Phase. During this stage, students will work alongside environmental professionals to design and implement initiatives that contribute directly to the protection and restoration of coral reefs and their associated habitats.

𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹𝘀 – 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟯

The journey beneath the surface continues with the third edition of our Discover Corals series.

Mauritius’ reefs are home to an extraordinary diversity of coral species, each playing a vital role in sustaining healthy marine ecosystems. Yet many of these corals remain little known and face increasing environmental pressures.

In this new edition, we invite you to dive deeper into the fascinating world of corals and uncover the unique characteristics that make them essential to the future of our reefs.

Guided by Sruti Jeetun, our Research Project Manager, this latest chapter shares new insights from ongoing research and conservation efforts, bringing you closer to the wonders hidden within Mauritius’ underwater landscapes.

This initiative forms part of the Land Based Coral Culture for Restoration, Conservation and Education project, funded by the EU in Mauritius and Beachcomber Resorts & Hotels, and implemented by Reef Conservation.

Have you spotted any of these rare corals while diving or snorkelling?
Your observations can help deepen our understanding and support coral conservation.

Following World Environment Day, we spent Saturday, 6 June, with the Scouts of Cap Malheureux exploring our ecosystems, climate change, and what these challenges mean for our future.
Together, we discussed the important connections between coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangroves, how climate change is affecting these ecosystems, and the simple actions each of us can take to make a difference.

What stood out most was the eagerness of the young participants to learn. Their curiosity, thoughtful questions, and willingness to engage with environmental issues made this exchange particularly rewarding. Inspiring and empowering the younger generation to better understand and protect our environment is at the heart of what we do, and this session was a meaningful step towards that goal.

We look forward to many more exchanges like this, helping to nurture informed and engaged environmental stewards for the future.

Thank you to the 14ème Nord Scout Cap Malheureux for this enriching exchange.

A successful World Ocean Day Celebration at the Heritage Marine Education Centre (HMEC), Bel Ombre.

Under the theme Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet, families, friends, and ocean enthusiasts came together to discover the richness of our marine ecosystems, learn about ongoing conservation efforts, and reflect on the impact of human activities on our environment.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to meaningful conversations about protecting our oceans. Every action counts towards a healthier blue planet.
