Coral Garden Conservation at the Mauritius Ocean Week 2026 Exhibition 🌊
Held at the Caudan Arts Centre and organised by the Ministry of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, the exhibition highlighted Mauritius' blue economy and marine conservation efforts.
It was a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of our mission and share our work in coral restoration, reef monitoring, COTS control and nature-based solutions.

Throughout the day, we exchanged insights with visitors and fellow conservation professionals, united by a shared commitment to protecting our marine ecosystems.

Thank you to the organisers for creating a space that gives visibility to these initiatives 💙

Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (COTS) outbreaks are a serious threat to coral reefs, requiring science and coordinated response!
As part of the 12-month national project “Control of Population Outbreak of Crown-of-Thorns Starfish Around Mauritius,” awarded to Coral Garden Conservation in 2025 by the Ministry of Agro-Industry, Food Security and Blue Economy, through the Blue Economy and Fisheries Division, we held the COTS Training Workshop on Population Control this week at Préskil Island Resort.

The workshop brought together the COTS Steering Committee, technical officers and key stakeholders to review COTS impacts, field findings, control approaches, monitoring and reporting through theory and practical demonstration.

Thank you to all participants for their presence, engagement and contribution!

COTS sightings can still be reported through the online platform on our website - https://coralgardenconservation.org/cots-sighting-reporting-platform/

🌍As we observe Earth Day today, we are reminded why protecting marine ecosystems matters so deeply in a changing climate.

Under this year’s theme, Our Power, Our Planet, we reflect on the importance of long-term action for our oceans. In St Felix, in the south of Mauritius, Coral Garden Conservation established a Voluntary Marine Conservation Area(VMCA) to help safeguard a shallow coral ecosystem in the lagoon 🌊

This update from 2024 to 2026 reflects both visible signs of climate stress, such as bleaching, and the resilience that reminds us why sustained conservation matters. 🪸

Thank you to our partners for their continued support!

Ocean education on seagrass with students in south-west Mauritius 🌊🌿

As part of our project “Community-led seagrass protection and climate adaptation through VMCA creation in Le Morne”, supported by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), Coral Garden Conservation recently conducted an awareness session with Grade 10 students at Collège du St Esprit Rivière Noire, in the south-west of Mauritius.

The session focused on the ecological importance of seagrass meadows, their role as nursery habitats for marine life, and their contribution to coastal resilience and climate change mitigation.

Thank you to the Rector, teachers, and staff for the warm welcome, and to the students for their active participation and engagement throughout the session.

We were pleased to welcome Dimitri Thériault, CFLI Program Manager, for a monitoring visit of our community-led seagrass protection and climate adaptation project in Le Morne, supported by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).

In close collaboration with the local community, the project focuses on safeguarding seagrass meadows, strengthening scientific monitoring, and co-designing a Voluntary Marine Conservation Area (VMCA) at the foot of the Le Morne Brabant UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thank you to the High Commission of Canada in South Africa as well as for their continued trust in locally driven, science-based conservation.

Advancing community-led marine conservation in Le Morne 🌊

At Coral Garden Conservation, we’ve recently started our new project, “Community-led seagrass protection and climate adaptation through VMCA creation in Le Morne,” with the support of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).

Seagrass meadows are key to the health of the Le Morne lagoon as they protect the coastline, support fish nurseries, improve water clarity, and store high amounts of blue carbon.

This project focuses on reinforcing community stewardship within the existing VMCA and promoting better understanding and protection of its seagrass and other sensitive habitats.

More to share soon as work continues on the ground! Stay tuned!

What if coral reefs could be explored without ever leaving the classroom? 🐠🪸
At Coral Garden Conservation , as part of our AquaVR project supported by the MOL Charitable Trust, we visited the Southern Handicapped Association -Special Education Needs School , a special needs education school in Riambel, south of Mauritius to bring the ocean closer to students through immersive virtual reality.

With headsets on, they explored coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and bleached coral zones, gaining a deeper understanding of climate change, biodiversity, and the importance of marine conservation.

The AquaVR project aims to make ocean education accessible to all. Seeing the students’ curiosity and engagement was a powerful reminder of why inclusive learning matters!

More school visits are planned to continue sharing marine knowledge, thanks to the support of the MOL Charitable Trust.

Coral Garden Conservation was at the 13th WIOMSA Symposium 2025, Mombasa, Kenya!
We had the opportunity to present our work on nature-based solutions (NbS) to combat coastal erosion - a growing challenge for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Our project in Mauritius, supported by the UNDP Ocean Innovation Challenge, focuses on restoring vulnerable coastlines through NbS approaches and local engagement 🌿
It was a fruitful experience exchanging insights and building connections with experts and organizations across the Western Indian Ocean region.

Thank you to the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) and the organizers for creating such a meaningful space for collaboration.

On this International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, we’re reminded how vital these coastal forests are for biodiversity and climate resilience.

At Trou Chenille, Le Morne, a UNESCO World Heritage site, our team at Coral Garden Conservation, with the support of the local community, planted young mangrove seedlings as part of our ongoing coastal restoration project using nature-based solutions.
Over time, they will stabilise the shoreline, trap sediments, and provide shelter for marine life, supporting both nature and livelihoods.

Mangroves are more than trees:

🌿 They protect coasts
🌿 Improve water quality
🌿 Support marine life and store carbon

Step by step, these seedlings will grow into a living barrier that restores balance to this fragile ecosystem.

Mauritius’ south-west lagoon is full of life: corals, seagrass, seaweed, and marine creatures, all part of a delicate ecosystem that needs care 🐟

At Coral Garden Conservation, we recently carried out a monitoring visit in our Voluntary Marine Conservation Area (VMCA) at Le Morne, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for both its cultural significance and its rich coastal and marine biodiversity 🌊

During this monitoring session, we welcomed Mr. Matthew Loken, Political and Economic Counsellor at the High Commission of Canada in South Africa, who visited Mauritius and joined us to explore the island’s marine environment. We warmly thank him for his interest and attention toward protecting Mauritius' unique ecosystems.

Understanding and protecting this rich biodiversity is essential, not just for marine life but also for the communities depending on healthy oceans. 🌎💙

At CGC, we’re always open to connecting with people and organisations passionate about marine and coastal conservation.
