🌟 AHEAD Engages with CRAC Anti-Drug Rodrigues & Local NGO 🌟

AHEAD recently had the privilege of engaging with a local NGO through the invaluable facilitation of CRAC Anti-Drug Rodrigues. Our team visited the CRAC headquarters, where we met with dedicated members and anti-drug professionals committed to making a difference in their community.

Despite limited resources, CRAC is doing an incredible job in the fight against drug abuse in Rodrigues. Their passion, resilience, and grassroots efforts are truly inspiring. The exchange was not only informative but also deeply moving, offering valuable insights into the realities and challenges of substance abuse prevention on the ground.

We’re grateful for the warm welcome and meaningful dialogue. This experience has reinforced our belief in the power of collaboration and community-driven action. Together, we are stronger in the fight against drugs. 💪

Engagement with Civil Society Organisations and Youth in Rodrigues
Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 May 2025

In my capacity as Chairperson of the Mauritius Council of Social Service (MACOSS), I had the privilege of engaging in a meaningful and inspiring exchange with several Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and youth in Rodrigues. This visit also offered me the opportunity to reconnect with the young people of the island in my capacity as President of AHEAD.

This engagement was not merely institutional, it was deeply personal. My connection with Rodrigues began 18 years ago when I co-founded AHEAD in 2007 with a few dedicated friends. What started as informal encounters with young people, students, and families in both Mauritius and Rodrigues has since evolved into the AHEAD Outreach Programme, a structured, community-driven initiative working at the grassroots level across the island to promote awareness, dialogue, and support. As such we have worked with trade unions under the AHEAD World of Work Programme, as well.

In the early days, we focused primarily on issues related to cigarette and alcohol addiction. Over time, the project matured into a holistic model that now also addresses emerging concerns such as drug use, illicit substances, and the growing influence of social media. Our approach has increasingly focused on building resilient communities through family engagement, youth empowerment, and school-based interventions.

As Chairperson of MACOSS, it was a natural progression to integrate addiction prevention and rehabilitation into the MACOSS Outreach Programme. During our visit on 28 and 29 May, the MACOSS team, together with local stakeholders, namely the Rodrigues Association for the Disabled (MACOSS’s local partner) and CRAC Anti Drug Group, an NGO engaged in addiction prevention, facilitated the participatory workshop with other NGOs, community organisations, and youth in Rodrigues. This collaborative event provided a valuable platform for dialogue, the exchange of information, experiences, and mutual learning.

A clear consensus emerged: there is an urgent need to invest in youth support and capacity building, with a strong emphasis on prevention. The importance of working closely with local NGOs,particularly those led by youth, students, and women, was widely recognised and embraced by all present.

This visit was significant, as it marked our first in-person re-engagement in Rodrigues since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a refreshing reminder of the power of face-to-face dialogue and community-based action. I remain committed to continuing, deepening this collaboration and strengthening our shared efforts to build a more inclusive, informed, and resilient Rodriguan society.
