Thalassemia Society of Mauritius - TSM Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder affecting the production of hemoglobin. Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder which is not contagious.

In Mauritius we have about 150 patients and those patients need lifelong blood transfusion for their survival. Thalassemia Society is a registered NGO (Reg No N/1229) created in 2009 to help those who are affected. The broad objectives of the association are
1. To support the patients and their families and counsel and educate them on the management of Thalassemia
2. To campaign for blood col

lection for Thalassemic patients
3. To advocate for creation of better transfusion and treatment facilities
4. To raise funds and provide equipment and medicines for underpriviledged thalassemic patients.
5. To create awareness among public and advocate for screening and counselling programmes for the control of Thalassemia
6. To promote collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life, WHO, and Regional and International thalassemia groups societies like Thalassemia International Federation.
7. To provide support to patients with other genetic haematological disorders such as Sickle Cell Anaemia and other blood disorders

🩸 episodes of severe pain,
🩸 recurrent infections,
🩸emergencies like strokes, sepsis or organ failures.

Improved treatments are available but access – and diagnosis - remains a challenge in many parts of the world.

🩸 One drop of humanity can become a lifetime of care.

On Sunday, 14 June, the world will mark 2026, a day to honour the voluntary blood donors whose generosity sustains the lives of people who depend on and , not once, but throughout their lives.

For individuals living with and other , regular access to safe blood is essential for survival, health and quality of life. A stable blood supply allows to continue their treatment, pursue education and work, support their families, and live with greater dignity, safety and hope.

This year’s message is simple, but deeply powerful:
Give blood. Give regularly. Save lives.

expresses its heartfelt gratitude to everywhere and calls on communities, health systems and societies to strengthen safe, sufficient and accessible blood donation for every patient, everywhere.
