SYAH connects young people from SIDS across Africa and Asia for the advancement of sustainable development.

SYAH :
1) Provides a dedicated network that connects young people working for sustainable development in the AIMS region of Small Island Developing States (SIDS);
2) Engages young people to play an active role in the sustainable development of their country, region and globally, thereby promoting youth-led sustainable development;
3)Promotes participatory governance, inclusive of youth from margin

alized and minority groups, and provide a platform for young people to actively engage in sustainable development policy-and-decision-making processes nationally, regionally and globally;
4)Promotes and support volunteerism amongst young people in the SIDS AIMS region;
5)Promotes and support research work done by youth in sustainable development areas; and
6)Believes sustainable partnerships with relevant stakeholders to achieve the above.

Our Story

Owing to the geographical dispersion of SIDS in the AIMS region and the lack of access to resources for youth-led green enterprises/sustainable projects, as well as, the lack of support for SIDS youth to run advocacy campaigns nationally, regionally and internationally, the need to set up a regional network that will enable SIDS youth in the region to collaborate on addressing common needs became very obvious during the AIMS Regional Youth Meeting organized by UNESCO, UNICEF and other partner organizations (such as the IOC) in July 2013 in Seychelles. The outcome of this meeting was to create a network that connects and convenes young people from SIDS in the AIMS region to collaboratively advance sustainable development among African and Asian SIDS. This motion was then endorsed by Governments of the AIMS region during the Regional Preparatory Meeting of SIDS of the AIMS in July 2013.

As part of its mandated role as coordinator of the AIMS group, the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) supported the creation and the incubation of SYAH. SYAH Secretariat is currently based at the Indian Ocean Commission in Èbène and it has long term partnership goals with the IOC for the region (including the Atlantic region).

SYAH is the only regional organisation in the AIMS region that connects young people from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) so that they can collaboratively advance sustainable development across these islands.

With the support of it’s 8 national chapters (SYAH- Comoros , SYAH- Cape-Verde , SYAH- Guinea- Bissau , SYAH- Sao- Tomé en Principe, SYAH-Mauritius, SYAH-Maldives, SYAH-Rodrigues, SYAH-Seychelles), SYAH

a) is building capacities of youth to become effective sustainable development advocates with special focus on Climate Change #Prep4COP, whilst providing them a credible platform to engage in sustainable development policy-making at national, regional and international levels.

b) is assisting young people to mobilize for impact through action-oriented projects on sustainable development at the grassroots levels

c) is running pilot action-oriented projects on Oceans #seeingblue , Plastic Pollution #tapwaterrevolution , Clean Water and Sanitation #tapwaterrevolution , Climate Adaptation #prep2adapt and Climate Change Migitation .

In 5-years since creation, SYAH has set up national chapters in 8 countries, mobilised over a 1000 young people to advocate for SIDS issues, given workshops on the topic of climate change, oceans and sustainable development policy to over 600 young people, got the Government of Seychelles to ban plastic bags through its Say No to Plastic Bags campaign, partnered with prison inmates to produce reusable bags in Seychelles, accompanied youth-led initiatives on marine conservation and plastic reduction through its project SeeingBlue and Tap Water Revolution in Mauritius, contributed to the restoration of native, endemic plants in Comoros, and actively engaged young islanders at key UN meetings. SYAH has also successfully established strategic partnerships as such Indian Ocean Commission, the Commonwealth Secretariat, UNESCO, and local companies, as well as Embassies and High Commissions.
