ERRC Rangers Gozo

ERRC Rangers Gozo We train the next generation in first aid, rescue, leadership, survival, fitness, and community response—through challenges, teamwork, and adventure.

RANGERS is a youth division of the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps (ERRC), created for teens aged 11–15 who are ready to step up, get hands-on, and learn real-world skills that matter. This isn’t a club. It’s a calling. For teens who want more than screens. For parents who want purpose behind the fun. Build confidence. Learn to lead. Be ready for anything.

What happens when you ask Rangers to bring a random item?

Apparently... bowling balls, hairdryers, dolls, clocks, projectors and a whole lot more! 😂

Our Rangers session this week was all about games, teamwork and having fun together.

We kicked things off with our "Bring a Random Item to Rangers" challenge, which led to plenty of laughs, surprised faces and some very interesting explanations!

But beneath all the randomness was something far more important.

Throughout the session, Rangers worked together, encouraged one another, tackled challenges in the heat, raced as teams, got soaked during water games and pushed themselves outside their comfort zones.

We were also delighted to welcome our newest Ranger, Shera, who settled in brilliantly and was immediately made to feel part of the team.

Days like these aren't just about games.

They're about building friendships, confidence, communication, resilience and a sense of belonging.

Seeing Rangers laugh together, support each other and grow as a team is exactly what the programme is all about.

A fantastic day, a lot of fun and plenty of memories made.

Yesterday at Ramla Bay, during double red flag conditions, two young swimmers entered the water and were quickly caught in the powerful rip current, which began dragging them towards a highly dangerous area near the rocks.

Without hesitation, our lifeguard entered the water to carry out a rescue, despite the extreme conditions. The sea was so dangerous that even strong, highly trained lifeguards found themselves struggling against the force of the water near the rocks — a location that has claimed far too many lives over the years.

This incident serves as an important reminder of why double red flags are raised. They are not there to spoil a day at the beach; they are there because conditions are considered extremely dangerous and entering the water could cost lives.

Many people may not realise that during double red flag conditions, lifeguards are not duty-bound to enter the water. The risks are simply too great. Yet when someone is in trouble, instinct, training, and the desire to save a life often take over. Lifeguards regularly place themselves in harm’s way to help others, even when the danger to themselves is significant.

When you choose to enter the sea during double red flag conditions, you are not only risking your own life. You are also putting the lives of rescuers at risk — the very people who may feel compelled to come to your aid.

Please respect the flags. If double red flags are flying, stay out of the water. No swim is worth a life.

We are grateful that this incident did not end in tragedy, but it could easily have done so. Let this be a lesson that saves lives in the future.

Some of the most important lessons don't happen in a classroom.

Recently our Rangers stepped away from rescue scenarios, radios and practical skills for something equally valuable — spending time together, learning about local traditions, and connecting with the community around them.

By taking part in traditional Maltese cooking, our Rangers had the opportunity to learn skills that have been passed down through generations, while sharing laughter, conversations and experiences together as a team.

At ERRC Rangers, we believe that leadership isn't only built through challenges and training. It's also built through understanding where we come from, respecting local culture, supporting community traditions and creating a sense of belonging.

These moments help our young people develop confidence, friendships, respect for others and pride in the place they call home.

Because strong communities don't happen by accident.

They are built by young people who learn to serve, connect and contribute.

Some of the most important people in ERRC Rangers don't wear a uniform.
They volunteer. They encourage. They teach. They support. They show up.
To every person who gives their time to help our young people grow into confident, capable and caring members of the community...
Thank you.
ERRC Rangers would not exist without you. 💚

ERRC RANGERS
This weekend our Rangers swapped rescue challenges for a different kind of skill.
With the guidance of Kalina and Jennifer, Rangers learned how to make traditional Gozitan Ftira from scratch.
More than just cooking, this was an opportunity to learn from members of our community, preserve local traditions and develop practical life skills.
A huge thank you to Kalina and Jennifer for sharing their knowledge and passion, and to the Scouts for allowing us to use their kitchen facilities 💪❤️
Leadership isn't only learned through rescue skills. It's also learned through responsibility, teamwork, patience and respect for our community and its traditions.

Every parent hopes their child grows into a confident, capable and kind adult.
That doesn't happen by accident.
It happens through challenge.
Through teamwork.
Through learning to step forward when something needs doing.
At ERRC Rangers, every activity is designed to help young people build confidence, resilience, responsibility and leadership in a supportive environment.
Because the skills they develop today become the foundations they build their future on.

ASSAULT COURSE MISSION DAY
Months of learning.
One mission.
One team.
On Saturday 30th May down at one of Gozos most beautiful bays, our Rangers took part in a multi-agency assault course designed to bring together everything they have been learning throughout the year.
Working alongside lifeguards, boat crews, first aid volunteers, search and rescue personnel, ERRC volunteers, and our amazing photographers, Rangers were challenged to complete six separate mission stations across Mġarr ix-Xini.
But this wasn't about speed.
It was about thinking.
Communicating.
Leading.
Adapting.
And working as a team.
The mission began at the Lifeguard Tower, where Rangers received their briefing, maps and coordinate sheets.
From there they moved through a series of challenges designed to test real-world skills.
🌊 Water Rescue Simulation
Rangers worked alongside lifeguards to demonstrate real life rescue simulations, communication, casualty awareness and safe rescue approaches while answering questions under pressure.
🔎 Underwater Search Challenge
Hidden clues had to be located and recovered from the water, encouraging observation, persistence and teamwork while reinforcing search techniques.
🚑 First Aid & Emergency Response
Rangers assessed casualties, answered emergency response questions and worked through realistic scenarios requiring calm thinking and effective communication.
🚤 Boat Operations & Navigation
Using coordinates and clues, Rangers worked with the rescue boat team to locate mission objectives and complete tasks that required problem-solving and navigation skills.
🪢 Rope Rescue Station
Rangers identified equipment, answered safety questions and demonstrated practical knot-tying skills learned during previous sessions.
🧩 Final Mission
Every clue, coordinate and piece of information gathered throughout the day was needed to solve the final challenge.
No single Ranger could complete it alone.
Success depended on the whole team working together.
Throughout the day, Rangers demonstrated leadership, resilience, communication, initiative and teamwork.
They learned that real emergency response isn't about one person being the hero.
It's about people bringing different skills together to solve problems and help others.
A huge thank you to every volunteer, instructor, lifeguard, boat crew member and supporter who gave their time, knowledge and energy to make this experience possible.
The Rangers left with more than clues and completed challenges.
They left with confidence.
Standing Ready. Learning to Serve. Growing to Lead.

🛟 A little community shout out 😊

Tomorrow ERRC Rangers are running a really exciting session under our Search & Rescue division, where the teenagers will be learning how to use drones — not just for search and rescue, but also how to record footage, take videos, and understand how this equipment can be used in real situations.

As part of this, we’d love to add a creative side to the session too.

We’re looking to see if there are any photographers, videographers, or even photography enthusiasts who would be happy to volunteer just one session with us.

The idea would be to help teach the teenagers some simple photography skills — how to use lighting, scenery, angles, and how to combine this with the footage they’ll be collecting from the drones.

It’s not just about rescue work. A huge part of Rangers is exposing teenagers to different skills, different people, community involvement, appreciating nature, and giving them opportunities they may not normally get.

The session starts with a short theory session at the VO Centre in Xewkija, then we head out on site to fly the drones.

Transport, volunteers, and organisation are all already in place — we’d just love to know if anyone would like to come along, share a skill, inspire the teenagers, and be part of something really positive.

Even if it’s just for one session, it would be hugely appreciated 🛟

If anyone is interested, please message me 😊

🛟 ERRC Rangers – Lifeguard Training

Today’s pool session was focused on building real rescue foundations.

Working alongside:
• Terry
• Matthew
• Mikkel

Rangers trained in:
• Swimming technique & energy conservation
• Breathing control
• Safe water entry
• Treading & water control
• Casualty approach
• Verbal communication
• Teamwork & roles
• Water awareness
• Discipline & controlled movement

Fitness was pushed hard — learning to stay calm and effective even when tired.

We finished with some controlled games and a bit of fun creating videos — but the standard stayed high throughout.

No rushing. No panic.
Assess. Communicate. Control.

This is how lifeguards are built.
