ABOUT GWU YOUTHS
The General Workers’ Union (GWU) Youths is a compliant Voluntary Organisation (VO/0562), which is affiliated and forms part of the GWU. The GWU Youths represents individuals who are considered as youths, that are under the age of thirty-five (35) years. The said VO also participates in national and international affairs with regards to youths in society. In Malta, the GWU Youths forms part of the Kunsill Nazzjonali għaż-Żgħażagħ (KNŻ) and it participates on a European level in the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).
The GWU Youths invests in jobs, education and equal opportunities. It strives to protect and improve the rights for everyone regardless of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, political affiliation or social class. It strives to reduce poverty and opposes bullying and harassment. Therefore, it promotes human rights, social and community advancement. The GWU Youths encourages equality policies at the workplaces and discusses with employers on how to improve their workplace in order to foster an environment which fosters equality.
We further promote statutory rights for union representatives (who make a real difference in the workplace) so they can attend conferences and training, which will strengthen their role in fostering a stronger working environment. The GWU Youths stands for unity because workers are stronger together and promotes a healthy working environment through conflict resolution and reconciliation . A stronger workforce strengthens the business of the employers, which in turn results in a stronger economy for our country.
The Young Workers’ Movement was founded on the 27th of August 1944, when a rally for young workers was organised by the GWU (a year later after the founding of GWU itself). The first executive committee was held on May the 11th, 1945. Any GWU member under the age of thirty-five (35) is also automatically considered to be part of the GWU –Youths, without incurring any extra charges. GWU – Youths is formed by students, employees or unemployed youth. The youths are the driving force for change and equality, a movement which helps to promote a more inclusive and sustainable civil society.
