The work doesn’t stop once the elections are over! Journalists from different newsrooms have spent the large part of the day checking in with MPs to report on the impending cabinet reshuffle. Coverages like this are also a chance to catch up with colleagues and enjoy the adrenaline of the job 💪

Last night, IĠM held its own end-of-campaign event for journalists to wind down together after a very busy period. Thank you to all the journalists who diligently covered the election and kept the public informed!

Today is World Press Freedom Day, and in Malta, journalists are spending it in the thick of an election campaign.

Whether journalists are out in the field, in studios, in front of cameras or behind screens, they are making sure that you have the information you need to make your choice. That is journalism doing what is should: keeping democracy alive.

But how free is the press in Malta, really?

The latest World Press Freedom Index ranks Malta 67th out of 180 countries. RSF criticised the lack of editorial independence at Malta’s public broadcaster, and the weak implementation of the European Media Freedom Act.

RSF also warned that, for the first time in the Index’s 25-year history, the global average score is at its lowest ever point.

Press freedom does not protect itself. It requires journalists to stand up for each other’s rights, across newsrooms, borders and politics. The IĠM exists to be that platform where journalists across Malta can stand together and raise a collective voice for the profession.

On this Press Freedom Day, we call on public institutions, political leaders, and citizens alike to value, protect, and invest in independent journalism.

📢 As the election campaign ramps up, we want to make something clear: journalists are doing their jobs and they deserve to do so without harassment or degrading comments, regardless of who they work for.

Recently, a female journalist was subjected to a sexist comment suggesting she belonged on OnlyFans rather than in a newsroom. This is unacceptable.

Election season is not a free pass for abuse. You can disagree with a journalist’s employer or with their coverage, but attacking a woman’s worth or reducing her to her body is harassment and has no place in public discourse.

Two days ago, Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil was targeted and killed while reporting on developments in southern Lebanon.

So far, four journalists and media workers have been killed in Lebanon since the US and Israel launched coordinated attacks on Iran on 28 February, starting a war.

In times of conflict, journalists put their lives on the line to bring us the latest news from the frontlines. No journalist should be targeted or killed for carrying out this important job.

The IĠM joins the IFJ and Union of Journalists of Lebanon in condemning the targeted assassination of Khalil while reiterating that deliberate attacks on civilians, including journalists, are war crimes.
