Women's Rights Foundation Women’s Rights Foundation (WRF) is a voluntary organisation committed to empowering women concerning their legal rights in Malta.

Mission statement

Women’s Rights Foundation (WRF) is a voluntary organisation committed to informing, educating and empowering women concerning their legal rights in Malta. WRF aims to achieve this by:-

1. protecting women’s rights through influencing laws, policy and practice,

2. preventing violence against women by raising public awareness and training

3. providing voluntary services to in

form women and their children about their legal rights. Primary focus will be given to domestic violence, sexual exploitation of women, including human trafficking and gender discrimination.

Big news today !!!

Our founder and director, Dr. Lara Dimitrijevic, have been elected to the Council of Europe Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO)

Needless to say, we at WRF are both proud and elated for this recognition of her work in the field of prevention of violence against women and girls ❤️

Warmest congratulations to the 🇲🇹 Maltese candidate Dr Lara Dimitrijevic on her election to the Council of Europe Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO) 👏.

Her expertise and longstanding commitment to gender equality, combating violence against women, and promoting victim-centred justice will undoubtedly contribute greatly to GREVIO’s vital work in advancing the protection of women across Europe.

Sincere thanks to all the countries that supported her candidature and placed their trust in her vision and experience.

“Silence, a lack of resistance, or the failure to say ‘no’ do not imply consent,” the judgment states.

The court said consent must be active, conscious and voluntary. It added that responsibility lies with the person initiating sexual activity to ensure consent exists.

“The granting of consent cannot be presumed from her silence. On the contrary, her silence is to be understood as the lack of consent,” Mr Justice Mark Simiana ruled as he ordered the case to be sent back for reconsideration.

"Lawyer Lara Dimitrijevic, from the Women’s Rights Foundation, who represented Agius, said “This decision is very powerful… it is a win for Emma who has had the courage to speak publicly about this horrific experience.”

“Women and girls facing crisis pregnancies typically would already be experiencing fear, isolation, poverty, coercion, abandonment, domestic violence, or serious medical uncertainty.

In such situations, they seek abortion pills through locked boxes, not out of choice, but out of desperation because Malta’s legal framework leaves them with very few safe, dignified, and timely alternatives.”
