Four of the eleven people who died in the 7 June shipwreck east of Malta are no longer nameless.

After a lengthy DNA identification process, the bodies of four Ethiopian victims were repatriated to Ethiopia on 26 August.

Their families had to provide certified DNA profiles before the authorities could confirm their identities and release their remains. Malta’s Ethiopian community mobilised to support families through the process and help with repatriation costs.

Nearly three months after the tragedy, four families can finally lay their loved ones to rest by name.

L-argumenti vojta mressqa minn Glenn Bedingfield u Rosianne Cutajar biex jiġġustifikaw id-deċiżjoni li Yusupha Dibassey jiġi deportat wara 18-il sena jgħix f’Malta, juru għal darb’oħra l-approċċ fundamentali tal-awtoritajiet Maltin lejn il-governanza: dgħajfa ma’ min hu b’saħħtu, iżda b’saħħithom ma’ min hu dgħajjef.

🏘️ Matul iż-żmien tiegħu f’Malta, Yusupha bena ħajja ġdida għalih innifsu u rabtiet sodi mal-komunità. Wasal Malta fl-2008, fl-età ta’ 23 sena, u matul dawn it-18-il sena bena għeruq hawnhekk. Mhux biss ġie magħġun mill-ispazji u l-komunitajiet ta’ madwaru, iżda kkontribwixxa wkoll b’mod attiv biex isawwarhom.

Għal 18-il sena, l-awtoritajiet Maltin tawh id-dokumenti meħtieġa u ppermettewlu jgħix u jaħdem f’Malta. Kienu huma stess li ppermettew lil Yusupha jibni ħajtu u jrabbi l-għeruq tiegħu hawnhekk.

❗Li Yusupha jiġi mġiegħel jaqla’ dawn l-għeruq hija deċiżjoni krudili li ma tistax titħassar b'argumenti legalistiċi. Il-Gvern Malti ma jistax jippretendi li qed jonora l-obbligi tiegħu favur l-istat tad-dritt. Fil-verità, qed jhedded lil membru tal-komunità tagħna.

Glenn Bedingfield u Rosianne Cutajar qed japprovaw u jappoġġjaw azzjonijiet li jafu li huma ħżiena. Fin-nuqqas ta’ ġustifikazzjoni morali, kellhom jirrikorru għall-“obbligi” u l-“proċeduri”.

Li tinħeba wara l-istat tad-dritt biex tgħakkes lid-dgħajjef mhijiex integrità morali. Hija biss krudeltà.
