Our position was not a passive one.

MSPCA fully supports stronger regulation, professional standards and accountability within the veterinary profession. But … regulation must also work in practice, especially for shelters dealing with vulnerable animals every day.

We were clear that there must be a proper distinction between veterinary procedures and the ongoing care suitably trained shelter staff provide under veterinary direction and supervision.

Animal welfare cannot become collateral damage to unclear or impractical regulation.

Stronger regulation, yes. But! it must be proportionate, workable and ultimately protect the animals it is intended to serve.

This is what happens when animals become commodities and money comes before welfare.

A puppy is not a product. A life should never be reduced to a price tag.

Do not buy from criminals.
Do not fund irresponsible breeding.

Ask questions. Demand documentation. Know where your animal has come from. Do a background check and if you don’t understand the paperwork, health tests or breeding standards, check with someone who does.

Because every purchase has consequences and when we keep paying, they keep breeding. And behind that sale, another dog or cat is suffering.

Choose welfare over profit. Choose compassion over demand.

Sometimes the strongest souls are the ones who give everything to others before finally getting the chance to choose themselves. 🌿

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CHARITY

Charity is not only about giving. It is about the kind of society we choose to build.

A humane society protects the vulnerable, speaks up when systems fail, and refuses to accept suffering as normal, including the suffering of animals.

How we treat those with no voice says everything about who we are.

A better society begins when compassion is matched by courage and accountability.

Another intake today. 💔🐾

This little Frenchie cross has come into MSPCA care through a genuine case and will now undergo a full shelter assessment before entering our rehoming process.

Some days carry more weight than others. They remind us that endings can be difficult, that circumstances can change everything, and that what happens next matters.

Today, one chapter closes. Our job is to make sure the next one is written with care, dignity and a real chance of a better future. 💛

🐾 HOW DO DOGS AND CATS EXPERIENCE TIME?

Dogs and cats may not understand hours and minutes in the way we do, but they are very aware of the routines, patterns and changes happening around them.

Rather than watching a clock, their experience of time is shaped by several things:

🕒 Routine: Pets become familiar with patterns such as feeding times, walks, when we leave and when we usually return.

☀️ Environment: Changes in daylight, smells, sounds and household activity can all provide clues that time is passing.

💛 Emotion: How an animal feels can also influence their experience. A calm, familiar period may pass without much concern, while fear, anxiety or excitement can make them more focused on what's happening around them.

So while your pet may not know you've been gone for “five hours”, they can recognise that time has passed through the changes and patterns around them.

Creating predictable routines and environments can help our pets feel more secure 🕓🐕🐈

Now 7 years old, Arnie would very much like to be sleeping in a home, not a kennel. He is cared for, monitored and taken on daily walks by our team, but we hope he doesn’t lose hope of finding his forever home. 🏡🐾
