St John Ambulance & Rescue Malta

St John Ambulance and Rescue is a voluntary organisation under the auspices of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.

We contribute to the Maltese society with First Aid, Medical, Fire Fighting, High Angle, Water and Sea Rescue. St John Rescue Corps operates in support of the constituted authorities and provides its services whenever requested to do so particularly in the case of national calamities or large scale rescue operations. Since its inception in 1986, the Corps has maintained a uniformed corps of adult

volunteers who are fully trained in first response rescue and first aid. Recent activities have included assistance in extinguishing the fire which broke out at the Foster Clarks factory, rescue and assistance to the public during storms and gales and standing by at events such as Isle of MTV, Notte Bianca and 5+5.

Remembering Queen Elizabeth II

On this day, we remember Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on 8 September 2022 after a remarkable 70-year reign.

For St John, her passing marked the end of a unique chapter in our history. Queen Elizabeth became Sovereign Head of the Order of St John in 1952, upon her accession to the throne, and remained a constant presence and supporter of the St John family throughout her reign.

Her connection with St John extended across the world, including here in Malta, where St John has a long and proud history of service.

Members of St John from Malta were among those who travelled to London to support the crowds at Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation in 1953. The following year, the newly crowned Queen visited Malta, including Gozo, during her first visit to the islands as Sovereign.

Over the decades, Her Majesty also recognised and honoured members of the Maltese St John community for their service.

Today, we remember not only a Queen, but a Sovereign Head of the Order of St John whose life was defined by duty, service and an enduring commitment to others.

The Queen Elizabeth Digital Memorial is creating a lasting record of the memories and experiences people around the world have of Her Majesty.

🎥 TENDER CALL | VIDEOGRAPHY SERVICES

St John Ambulance & Rescue Malta is inviting quotations from suitably qualified videographers / production companies for the provision of videography and video editing services for our project:

“Għajnuna f’waqtha! Taħriġ fl-Ewwel Għajnuna bil-Malti”

The project will produce a series of short, practical First Aid training videos designed to make essential lifesaving knowledge more accessible to Maltese-speaking audiences.

🎬 Scope of Services

The successful service provider will be required to:
* Film and produce 10 short First Aid training videos
* Approximate final duration: 2–3 minutes per video
* Language: Maltese
* Include Maltese voice-over where required
* Include suitable subtitles, titles, transitions and graphics
* Work with St John Ambulance & Rescue volunteers who will feature in the videos
* Ensure a consistent visual style across the full video series
* Deliver final videos suitable for publication on social media, video-sharing platforms and the organisation’s website

📍 Filming
Filming is expected to take place at a maximum of two locations in Malta.
Where possible, filming is ideally to be scheduled on a Saturday, subject to agreement between the production team and St John Ambulance & Rescue.

📅 Timeline
The production must be fully completed by end of November 2026. The first completed videos are required for launch in October 2026, with the remaining videos to follow within the agreed production schedule.

📱↔️🌍 Online or offline… where’s the balance?

On Wednesday, the 26th of August, Day 3 of our Erasmus+ Youth Exchange with DLRG-Jugend Bayern was all about putting our digital habits to the test.

The day started with participants taking a closer look at their own screen time and digital habits, before heading out for a Digital Detox Scavenger Hunt around the grounds. 📵🔎

Then it was time to debate!

The Digital vs Real-Life Balance Debate tackled three big topics: social media and social life, screen time and control, and the value of the offline world. Different opinions meant plenty of discussion as participants challenged ideas, defended their views and heard perspectives from both Malta and Germany. 🇲🇹🤝🇩🇪

Finally, reflection became action. Participants worked on three SMART goals of their own, turning what they had discussed throughout the day into practical changes they can take home with them.

And after spending a day talking about balance, there was only one appropriate ending: make-your-own pizza night! 🍕😄

Less scrolling. More talking. A little debating. And plenty of pizza.

⛑️ First Aid Training — Adult, Child & Baby (Back in September!)

First aid is a skill you hope you never need. But when you do, knowing what to do matters.

Our First Aid Certification Course is back this September, with three full days of training designed to prepare participants to respond effectively to a wide range of emergencies involving adults, children and babies.

Training includes:
✅ CPR and choking
✅ Assessing emergency situations
✅ Medical emergencies including asthma, allergic reactions, stroke and seizures
✅ Bleeding, burns and fractures
✅ Head and spinal injuries
✅ Shock, fainting and more

This is the standard training recommended for workplace first aid providers.

🧠💚 Healthy minds, happy lives!

Tuesday, 25th August brought Day 2 of our Erasmus+ Youth Exchange with DLRG-Jugend Bayern, and this time we swapped cybercrime for conversations about mental health, wellbeing and what keeps us feeling good.

The morning kicked off with Julian and Joanne from Happy Life, helping participants explore emotional wellbeing and the life skills that can help us build healthier relationships with ourselves and with those around us. The session also looked at how looking after our own wellbeing can help us connect with others, give back through volunteering and, ultimately, live a happier life.

The afternoon brought the digital world back into the conversation, but with a different question: when you need a mental boost, where do you turn?

The answers? Sport, music, family and friends came out on top. 🎵🏃‍♀️💬
While social media certainly has its place, when spirits need lifting, sometimes the best connection is an offline one.

There was plenty of sharing, moving around, comparing perspectives and discovering that despite coming from two different countries, we might have more in common than we think. 🇲🇹🤝🇩🇪

And because a day about balance deserves a little balance of its own, we finished with an underground tour of the historic fort and dinner!

Not a bad way to end Day 2!

🇲🇹🇩🇪 Learning together, across borders!

On Monday, 24th August, Day 1 of our Erasmus+ Youth Exchange with DLRG-Jugend Bayern focused on navigating the digital world with greater awareness.

The day began with a dedicated session delivered by BeSmartOnline , which explored online safety and encouraged participants to think critically about their experiences and behaviour online. The session highlighted the importance of staying informed, protecting personal information, recognising potential risks, and making responsible choices when using digital platforms. It also created space for participants to share their own experiences and reflect on how they can contribute to a safer online environment.

This was followed by a Cybercrime Awareness session with PS234 Ryan Muliette and PS267 Anthony Cassar from The Malta Police Force who discussed the risks associated with an increasingly digital world, including scams, misleading information, suspicious online content, and the importance of approaching digital communication critically. 💻🔍

Digital literacy is also about understanding our own habits. Participants reflected on their screen time and relationship with social media before assessing their digital skills through the Europass Digital Skills Assessment.

A day of questioning what we see, reflecting on how we use technology, and becoming more mindful of the digital world we navigate every day.

And after all that screen talk? We went offline for a swim. 🌊😄

A great start to a week of learning, sharing perspectives, and building connections between Malta and Germany. 🇪🇺

Our Emergency First Aid Course on 3 September is now fully booked.

A full house for a full day of practical first aid training, covering the essential skills needed to respond when an emergency happens.

From assessing an emergency and prioritising actions to CPR, choking and managing common injuries, the course equips participants with skills that can make a real difference when every second counts.

📍 Our latest visit: BeeSmart Summer Club! 🌊🐝

Young Lives, Safe Shores made its way to BeeSmart Summer Club for another fun-filled day as part of our wider project promoting water safety, prevention and emergency preparedness across local communities.

Supported through the VOPS Scheme, Young Lives, Safe Shores combines water safety education for children with investment in educational resources and St John Ambulance & Rescue’s wider water rescue capabilities.

From spotting beach flags and decoding what they mean, to learning how to recognise hazards, respond in an emergency and getting hands-on with the equipment used by our St John volunteers, the children embraced every activity with energy, curiosity and plenty of smiles! 🌊🚩🚨

Learning how to stay safe around water can start young, and it can be fun too! 🌊☀️

A big thank you to BeeSmart Summer Club for having us, and to all the children who took part so enthusiastically! 💙
