Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malta

Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malta Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malta is the sole, sovereign masonic authority in the jurisdiction of Malta.

On behalf of our fraternity and of this constituted Link in the universal Chain of Regular Grand Lodges, we are honoured and privileged to bid you welcome to our page, and to Malta. The tradition of Maltese hospitality is world-renowned and we have a warm embrace for those of our Brotherhood who might wish to visit our Islands and meet us. To those who only know of Freemasonry through portrayals a

s a secret, self-serving, or sinister society, you could be persuaded otherwise. If you are a stranger enquiring of our organisation, of our purpose, or of our beliefs may we say at the outset that we are not a religious order but do believe in a universal all-seeing God; and through its precepts Freemasonry encourages members to follow that religion to which they belong. Worldwide Masonic membership includes men of all races, nationality, political affiliation, colour, and creed. As to Political persuasion we are strictly apolitical and positively forbid political debate when we gather together. We claim no special place in society, and in applying strict disciplines upon ourselves we remain cognisant of weakness in our brethren and others in distress, and are moved to assist those in difficulty to the utmost of our ability. Our motivation is manifold and centres on developing inborn traits of humility, tolerance, and charity, which we seek to hone to individual and to universal advantage; but, as with all mortals, sadly we often fall short of fully achieving our objectives and ambitions. We mutually congregate in discreet and orderly fashion respecting traditions inherited over centuries past. Self-control and respect for authority are as cement to the cornerstones of our beliefs and our behaviour. We form ourselves in groups we call Lodges; each functioning individually with its team of officers headed by an elected Master; each operating through our Constitution, i.e. our internal rules and procedures; and all responding to the authority of our Grand Lodge. We abide by the laws of the State and are critical of those in violation, and expect similar from those around us. We recognise there are some who regard our titling of officers, our terminology, our formal dress codes, and our conduct, as rather peculiar in a modern society: but we are unapologetic in adhering to our traditions. Whatever your motivation in contacting us, we thank you for your interest and for this opportunity to tell you a little about ourselves. With our best wishes for every success in your ongoing honest endeavours,

Three Great Lights of Masonry

The Three Great Lights of Freemasonry the Volume of the Sacred Law, the Square, and the Compasses represent the core moral teachings of the Craft.

โ€ข The Volume of the Sacred Law reminds us to live according to divine and moral principles.
โ€ข The Square teaches honesty, fairness, and upright conduct in dealing with others.
โ€ข The Compasses symbolize self-control and the importance of keeping our passions within proper bounds.

Together, they form a universal guide to living a life grounded in faith, integrity, and discipline, principles that can inspire both Masons and the general public.

Not a crown Not a sword. Not a medal of gold.

Yet to a Freemason, the Apron is more precious than all of them.

Made of simple lambskin pure, white, and unblemished, it reminds us that true honor is not worn for display, but lived through character.

It is the first gift a Mason receives and the last emblem laid upon him when he returns to the Grand Lodge Above.

It does not symbolize power. It symbolizes work.

The Apron teaches that Masonry is not about titles, but labor, the labor of improving oneself, serving others, and building a better world stone by stone.

Its whiteness speaks of purity of life. Its shape recalls the working tools of ancient craftsmen. Its presence whispers a quiet duty:

To act justly. To walk humbly. To keep our hands clean and our hearts upright.

Kings may wear robes.Warriors may wear armor. But a Mason wears an Apron, for he is called not to conquer men,but to build himself.

Simple.Sacred.Earned.

The badge of a Masonโ€™s honor is not what he hasโ€ฆbut what he has worked to become.

In Freemasonry, the Level is more than just a tool for a builder; it is a profound symbol of interpersonal relationships and the inherent dignity of the human soul. While the Square regulates our actions, the Level regulates our conduct toward one another.

In operative masonry, the actual craft of building with stone, the Level is used to lay horizontals. It ensures that the foundation of a structure is perfectly flat and even. Without a true level, a building might lean or eventually collapse under its own weight because the pressure isn't distributed equally.

For speculative masons, the Level is a symbol of Equality. It teaches us a few vital lessons, It reminds us that we all spring from the same stock, share the same nature, and hope for the same end. In a Lodge, worldly distinctions like wealth, political power, or social status are left at the door. A king and a laborer meet "on the level," recognizing their shared humanity. The level also teaches that a person's true value lies in their character and virtue, rather than their external circumstances.

The Level also serves as a somber reminder of our mortality. It suggests that while some may travel a path of luxury and others a path of hardship, Time eventually brings us all to the same state. Death is the "ultimate leveler" that closes the gap between the high and the low.

In Freemasonry, the Square is perhaps the most recognizable and fundamental of all the working tools. It is traditionally the tool of the Worshipful Master, used to ensure that the work of the lodge is "true" and upright.

In operative masonry, the actual craft of building stone structures.. the square is an instrument consisting of two metal or wooden rules joined at a perfect 90-degree angle.

Its primary functions are:

โ€ข Testing the Accuracy of Stones: To ensure that the edges of a stone are cut perfectly perpendicular to one another.
โ€ข Ensuring Structural Integrity: A building can only rise straight and strong if the foundation stones are
"square." If they are off by even a fraction, the entire wall will eventually lean and collapse.

For the Speculative Mason, the physical tool is transformed into a moral guide. As the ritual often
states:

"The Square, to square our actions."

The Square represents the "Golden Rule" to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Just as a stone must be square to fit into the Great Architect's building, a Mason's actions must be square with the laws of morality and virtue.

The 90-degree angle is the meeting of a horizontal line (representing our progress through time) and a vertical line (representing our uprightness toward God and man). Where these two meet, the Square is formed, symbolizing a life of balance and integrity.

In Freemasonry, the Rough Ashlar represents man in his natural and imperfect state unrefined, unpolished, and shaped by passions, ignorance, and human frailty. It is the stone as it is first taken from the quarry, bearing rough edges and irregular surfaces, unfit yet for its place in the builderโ€™s structure.

Symbolically, the Rough Ashlar reminds every Mason of who he was before the Light of Masonry began its work upon him. It stands for the candidate at the start of his journey: sincere, willing, but still in need of discipline, education, and moral improvement.

Through the proper use of the working toolsโ€”self-control, reflection, study, and brotherly guidance, the Mason labors upon his own Rough Ashlar. Each stroke represents an effort to subdue vice, correct errors, and cultivate virtue. The work is personal and lifelong; no other man can properly shape the stone for us.

The lesson of the Rough Ashlar teaches humility. It reminds us that all men begin imperfect, and that true Masonry is not about claiming perfection, but about committing to continuous improvement. By faithfully working on our Rough Ashlar, we prepare ourselves to be made ready for a more noble purpose, fitting into the moral and spiritual temple not made with hands.

In this way, the Rough Ashlar calls every Mason to labor, not on stone, but on himself.

The lecture of the Trowel reminds us that we are all "living stones" being readied for that spiritual temple, that "house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."
As you move through the world, the Trowel should be ever in your hand. It is not enough to simply possess the "stones" of morality or the "square" of virtue; you must actively spread the cement. In moments of discord, the Trowel is used to quiet resentment. In moments of sorrow, it is used to bind up the broken-hearted.

"The Trowel teaches that we should never allow the cold winds of envy or the storms of passion to breach the walls of our Temple."

Application in Daily Life:

1. Forgiveness: Actively smoothing over the minor grievances that naturally arise in any human relationship.
2. Silence: Sometimes the best way to "cement" a relationship is to remain silent when a brotherโ€™s reputation is at stake.
3. Active Charity: Recognizing that the bond of Masonry extends beyond the Lodge room and into the world at large.

THE CHISEL

The Chisel teaches the Freemason that as the chisel enables the Operative Mason to act on the rude material of the world and to shape and polish it according to his design, so too must the physical, mental and moral faculties of man be so sharpened as the chisel as to be an appropriate instrument by which to exert his influence.

A clean body, free of impurities and detrimental influences produces clean and healthful emotions by which the Freemason may apply and experience the full spectrum of sentimental and emotional splendor communicated by Masonic ritual.

A sharp mind, properly trained, focused and educated in the classical arts allows him to be quick of spirit and adaptive to all the intricacies of the Great Architect's design that he may discover in the course of his work and his success shall always depend on his ability to apply the sharp point of his consciousness in concentrated and consistent effort.

His moral faculties must be overflowing with positive, cheerful and grateful thoughts, always striving toward the highest expression of himself that he may, by the exercise of character, virtue and justice, show forth the Glory of the Spirit implanted in him by his Creator.

All this is taught in humble form of the Mason's Chisel
