What terrible news! May they rest in peace and the survivors find hope and justice.

A fishing boat rescued 53 people in international waters off Malta on Sunday after the vessel they were on was in distress, according to the Maltese authorities.

However, at least 11 immigrants died at sea after they fell overboard while attempting to reach the assisting fishing vessel. The bodies of the dead migrants were recovered by an Italian coastguard vessel that was dispatched to the area.

The incident happened some 50 nautical miles to the east of Malta, the Armed Forces of Malta said in a statement on Monday morning. The area falls within Malta’s search and rescue competence.
