Tarxien Rainbows boosted their hopes of avoiding the bottom two in the Closing Round with a crucial 1-0 victory over Mosta at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. A first‑half own goal by Jake Vassallo proved decisive in a balanced contest that saw Jacques Scerri’s side climb out of the danger zone.

The breakthrough arrived on 17 minutes when Junior Erico’s effort took a heavy deflection off Mosta captain Vassallo, wrong‑footing goalkeeper David Akpan and rolling into the net. Mosta reacted well and came close to equalising just after the half‑hour mark, as Joaquim Fernandes unleashed a powerful strike that Andrea Cassar tipped onto the crossbar in a superb save.

A minute before the interval, Mosta were handed a golden opportunity when Petar Panic brought down Prince Emmanuel inside the area. Fernandes stepped up, but Cassar produced another outstanding stop to preserve Tarxien’s lead.

Mosta continued to push after the break, with Joao Victor testing Cassar again 20 minutes into the second half, but the Tarxien goalkeeper remained solid. Five minutes from time, substitute Marko Musulin forced a good save from Akpan, yet Tarxien held firm to secure a vital three points in their battle for safety.
