Refugee Week 2026

It was a great pleasure for UNHCR to be at the launch event of Refugee Week Malta 2026 yesterday. This is leading up to the World Refugee Day on 20 June, being more of a refugee month in Malta, which is a nice development😊.

The theme of Courage, or Qlubija, invites us to reflect on the situation of all those who have been forced to flee their homes due to persecution, violence or war and what they face as refugees every day. It also asks us to consider our own courage to stand up for what is right and speak for the right to seek asylum for those who need it – until everyone is safe.

UNHCR Malta look forward to joining in this year’s Refugee Week programme and share a warm thank to all the organizers, carrying the message of courage through out this important year of commemoration of the 75 years of the Refugee Convention – and beyond.

Do not forget Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh

Nine years after large-scale forced displacement from Myanmar, around 1.2 million Rohingya refugees remain in Bangladesh, dependent on humanitarian assistance for their basic needs.

With new arrivals since 2024 and increasing risks faced by those seeking alternatives, the plight of Rohingya refugees must not be overlooked.

Do not forget Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

As we this year mark the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, a cornerstone of international protection that safeguards the rights and dignity of people forced to flee, UNHCR Malta continues to work with partners to strengthen protection responses on the ground.

Earlier this month, UNHCR Malta initiated a dialogue with partners on how to better support children of protection status holders as they transition into adulthood and navigate available solutions. Young people who have grown up in Malta as dependents of protection holders can face legal and systemic challenges when turning 18, which are often compounded by a lack of clear information on their rights and next steps.

We thank all partners who took part in these first series of discussions, which underscores the importance of collaboration in identifying practical and sustainable solutions.

We look forward to continuing this dialogue and strengthening our joint efforts to support these young people in building their futures.

They once stood as children whose lives were shaped by displacement.

Today, they stand together at the highest level of the game.

UNHCR’s Gamechanging Team brings them together ahead of the 2026 , highlighting what can happen when children forced to flee are given safety and opportunity.

Eleven players. Eleven stories. One message.

Because football is more than a game.

Families come in all shapes and sizes. However a family looks, one thing is certain. Families belong together. Refugee families belong together.

For millions of refugees, staying together through displacement is not a given. It is something struggled for, waited for, and too often, lost.

On Family Day, we celebrate every family in all its forms, and reaffirm that no family should be torn apart by force.

From our families to yours, happy .
