HOT SUMMER TEMPERATURES
It seems that the weather has changed and we may experience high temperatures in the coming days. Although we are not expected to face a heat wave, it is important to remember that rabbits—especially long-haired breeds—are particularly vulnerable to heat.
Rabbits are delicate animals and can easily suffer from heat stroke, which can be fatal. Please follow these guidelines to help keep them safe and comfortable:
1. Keep your rabbit in a cool area
If your rabbit is housed in a cage or hutch, make sure it is moved away from direct sunlight and any area where heat tends to build up.
2. Provide fresh water every day
Change the water frequently so it stays cool and fresh. It is also a good idea to use a larger water bottle or provide two water bottles so your rabbit always has access to drinking water.
3. Avoid direct exposure to air conditioning or fans
Do not place your rabbit directly in front of an air conditioner or fan. However, keeping them in a cool room where they can benefit from the cooler air is recommended.
4. Grooming is essential
Regular grooming helps remove excess and loose fur, particularly in long-haired rabbits, making it easier for them to regulate their body temperature.
5. Consider cooling mats
Rabbits release body heat through contact with cooler surfaces. Cooling mats can help them stay comfortable during hot weather.
6. Allow rabbits access to tiled floors
Tiles stay cooler than carpets, blankets, or towels and can help rabbits cool down naturally.
7. Pay attention to their diet
During warmer months, you may occasionally offer:
A slice of peeled apple once a week
A celery stalk or a small amount of parsley once every two weeks
A slice of cucumber
A small piece of orange
Everything should be given in moderation.
Checking for Signs of Overheating
Check your rabbit daily by gently feeling the inside of its ears. A rabbit’s ears act as a natural thermostat, helping regulate body temperature.
If the ears feel unusually hot:
a) Keep a face cloth reserved for your rabbit.
b) Soak it in cool water and wring it out.
c) Place the damp cloth gently over your rabbit’s ears for approximately three minutes.
Possible Signs of Heat Stroke
Watch out for the following signs:
Sitting isolated in a corner
Wide, strained, or distressed-looking eyes
Unusual restlessness or frantic running around
These may indicate heat stroke or severe overheating.
If this happens:
Handle your rabbit gently and calmly.
Move it immediately to a cooler environment.
Apply the cool, damp cloth to its ears as described above.
Monitor its condition closely.
Important
If your rabbit shows severe symptoms such as extreme weakness, collapse, difficulty breathing, or unresponsiveness, seek veterinary attention immediately, as heat stroke can quickly become life-threatening.
