Free speech safeguards our right to speak, but it does not exempt us from the duty to think, verify and act in good faith, says Manuel Delia.

Illum il-Qorti tal-Appell difnet il-gideb li gideb fuqi Simon Mercieca. Żewġt iqrati issa ddeċidew li l-allegazzjonijiet li għamel fuqi kienu foloz u libellużi u li meta professur full-time tal-istorja jippubblika “fatti”, il-pubbliku għandu dritt jippretendi li dawn il-fatti iċċekkjahom, ivverifikahom, u huma veri. Minflok, Mercieca abbuża mill-kreddibiltà tal-professjoni tiegħu biex ixerred gideb fuqi u fuq oħrajn. Il-verità issa tkellmet, b’mod ċar u darba għal dejjem.

Today, Malta’s Court of Appeal has finally ended Simon Mercieca’s lies about me. Two courts have now ruled that his allegations were defamatory and that, when a full-time history professor publishes “facts,” the public has a right to expect that they have been checked and verified as true. Instead, Mercieca exploited the credibility his profession grants him to spread falsehoods about me and others. The truth has now been spoken, clearly and definitively.

Sunday newspaper deadlines are from another time. Today’s piece was already printed when the government published the ICC ruling on Friday afternoon. And yet, I wasn’t altogether wrong, was I?

The ICC is a private forum for commercial arbitration. The case before it was not about whether corruption occurred in the hospitals deal – it was about money, says Manuel Delia

Dalgħodu lqajt diversi għaqdiet ta' ġurnalisti, akkademiċi u attivisti - fosthom Repubblika - għal konferenza dwar il-ġurnaliżmu investigattiv li organizzajt fil-Parlament Ewropew, fejn indirizzatna wkoll il-President tal-Parlament Ewropew Roberta Metsola.

Il-Parlament se jibqa' fuq in-naħa tal-ġurnaliżmu u l-libertà tal-espressjoni, u xogħolna se jibqa' ffukat fuq hekk.

Another important win for free speech in Malta. The background is a libel suit brought against me for an article I wrote in 2019, but this is not about the narrow issues of that libel suit. Today’s decision confirms that though a court might decide on a libel suit, the right to access the courts to challenge possible violations of the right to free expression does not go away. My argument that this is what happened in this case still needs to be heard. But today I secured the right to have it heard. That will be useful to all journalists (and anyone else in a similar situation) in the future. Another win in the uphill battle for media freedom in Malta. Thank you to my lawyers Eve Borg Costanzi and Matthew Cutajar.

It took 5 years to get this right recognized. But it’s not about me. This here is a recognition that the conditions in which detainees are kept is very much a matter of public interest and democracy requires that journalists can check directly for allegations of inhuman detention conditions. This case goes back to the reign of terror perpetrated by Alexander Dalli, protected by Byron Camilleri, and defended by Robert Abela. In violating my rights as a journalist they hid the violations of the rights of detainees. Hopefully this ruling by Malta’s highest court will stop them doing this in the future.

Court rules journalist Manuel Delia should be allowed into the Corradino Correctional Facility and Malta’s detention centres, but must be subject to safeguards to balance transparency with security and privacy

Repubblika is inviting young people aged 18 to 35 to a four-day camp in Gozo this September aimed at empowering future activists. Taking place from 2 to 5 September, the camp will equip participants with tools to defend democracy and promote justice in their communities.

The initiative is part of the EU-funded RESTART project, held across five countries to boost democratic engagement and tackle the impact of organised crime. Malta’s edition will blend workshops with hands-on experience, including work on a Gozo property being repurposed for social good.

Participants will explore core democratic values, human rights, and active citizenship while gaining real-life leadership and teamwork experience. Repubblika is calling on anyone ready to take action for democracy to apply.
