The MFPA welcomes the recent approval by the Malta Premier of the 2026/27 Premier League calendar and, in particular, the consultation process undertaken with player representatives during its preparation.

Following discussions with our members, the MFPA provided feedback to the League and is pleased to note a number of positive developments, including:

โœ… Fewer midweek fixtures
โœ… A longer recovery period over Christmas and New Year
โœ… Greater visibility of the fixture schedule throughout the season

These were among the key concerns consistently raised by players in recent seasons and their inclusion represents a positive step forward for player welfare, recovery, planning and performance.

The MFPA also encourages the continued consideration of internationally recognised player welfare principles, including adequate off-season rest, sufficient recovery time between matches, effective player workload management and appropriate measures to protect players during periods of extreme heat.

We thank the League for engaging with player representatives and remain committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that Maltese football continues to develop in a way that balances sporting, commercial and player welfare considerations.

Amateur players whose obligatory period of service with their club has come to an end have the right to request their release and become free to join another club.

To be released from their club, such players must, between the 9 June and the 31 July, send an email to both their club and the Malta FA ([email protected]) requesting to be released.

If a player does not request to be released within this period, the obligatory period of service shall automatically be extended by a further two seasons.

Amateur players who are offered a professional contract may also be entitled, subject to the applicable MFA Regulations, to join the club offering such contract even if they are still WITHIN their obligatory period of service, provided that any applicable training compensation is paid to their former clubs and that this is done between the 9 June and 31 July.

If you would like help with the above process or would like to ask any questions, feel free to contact us on ๐Ÿ“ง [email protected].

The MFPA joins the local sports community in mourning the passing of Antonio P. Briguglio, a true pillar of Maltese sports.

For several years, Mr Briguglio was a prominent football referee and after his retirement, he remained synonymous with refereeing while also occupying roles in sports administration.

We express our profound condolences to Mr Briguglioโ€™s family and friends at this sad time. May he rest in peace.
