The Executive Committee of the Malta Maritime Law Association had the pleasure to meet the Registrar General of Ships and Seamen Dr. Ivan Tabone, together with executives of Transport Malta's Merchant Shipping Directorate on 19 May 2026.

The meeting served as a formal introduction of the newly appointed Executive Committee, as well as the MMLA's various subcommittees, chairpersons and respective initiatives.

Members present discussed the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the maritime sector in the coming years, together with possible ways and means of collaboration aimed at further strengthening the Malta Flag and enhancing operational efficiency.

We look forward to continued cooperation and constructive dialogue in support of Malta’s maritime industry.

Following the recent election of the Malta Maritime Law Association's executive committee, all sub-committees have restarted their mandate. Therefore, our members are encouraged to confirm if they wish to participate or re-join the sub-committees for this term.

The Malta Maritime Law Association recently organised an engaging seminar titled “Sailing Towards a Digital Ship Register”, bringing together key stakeholders to explore the future of maritime and corporate registries in an increasingly digital world.

The seminar was honoured by the presence of Hon. Minister Chris Bonett and Hon. MP Ivan Castillo as a distinguished speakers, whose contributions set the tone for insightful discussions on innovation and regulatory evolution.

A central highlight of the event was the panel discussion on “Shipping and Corporate Registries in the Digital Era”, moderated by Dr. Stephan Piazza, Chair of the MMLA Education Subcommittee.

The panel brought together a diverse group of experts:

* Dr. Alessia Carbone – Director, Sanction Monitoring Board (Transnational Threats and Sanctions)

* Ms. Farrugia – Senior Manager, Malta Business Registry (MBR)

* Ms. Alexandra Ellul Dodevski – Projects Coordinator & EU Funding, Transport Malta

* Dr. Anndrea Moran – Co-Chair, MMLA Strategy Subcommittee

The discussion explored the challenges and opportunities presented by digital transformation, highlighting the importance of innovation, compliance, and collaboration in shaping the future of Maltese maritime services.

The Malta Maritime Law Association is organising the seminar "Sailing Towards a Digital Ship Register". The event will be held on 24th March, 2026 at 14:30 Hours at Casino Maltese, Valletta.

The MMLA has invited representatives from Transport Malta, the Malta Business Registry - MBR and the Sanctions Monitoring Board to discuss the transitioning towards a Digital Ship Register and the opportunities for all shipping practitioners.

The Seminar will be followed by a Networking Reception and the MMLA's Annual General Meeting.
