Mid-Dlam għad-Dawl

Mid-Dlam għad-Dawl A page to promote our Foundation and our mission Mid-Dlam ghad-Dawl (pronounced: midlam ad-daul) is the Maltese version of "From Darkness to Light". Dr Mark F.

This name was chosen by the founders of our organisation to express their hope in the future. The organisation was founded on April 10, 1995, by a group of prisoners held at our local Corradino Correctional Facility in Paola, Malta. The main original aim of the founders was to help themselves and their families undergo the prison experience with more dignity and self-esteem. In August of that same

year, following their release from the prisons, two of the leading founders continued the group on the outside, thereby coming into close contact with the non-government organisation Daritama (which in Maltese means "House of Hope"). In this way the group became part of a larger organisation under the leadership of Rev. Montebello OP. From then onwards the organisation continued to grow, flourish and extend its services to prisoners, their families, ex-prisoners and victims of crime. Mid-Dlam ghad-Dawl is affiliated to Action for Prisoners' Families of England and Wales (APF), and an associate member of European Group of Prisoners' Abroad (EGPA). Mid-Dlam ghad-Dawlis also part of the local Association of Prison Volunteers. In our work we are guided by a set of principles and a personalistic philosophy. Our organisation is:

• a valuable partner for the authorities and justice administrators of our country for the improvement of justice;

• an association of professionals who provide advice and support in improving the structures of the penal system; and

• an uncompromising foe of criminality and an unflagging defender of every prisoner's future possibility of living happily whilst upholding the legitimate laws of the nation.

Residents from Dar Bla Ħitan have started attending woodworking sessions organised by the Cottonera Community Service.

These sessions provide an opportunity to develop practical skills, build confidence, establish positive routines, and strengthen community connections. We look forward to seeing our residents continue to grow through this valuable experience.

A sincere thank you to the Cottonera Community Service, the volunteers, and everyone involved in making this initiative possible.

We recently welcomed our latest admissions to Dar Bla Ħitan. To help them settle in, we kicked off the first session of our Identity, Community, and Civic Awareness module.

By sharing knowledge of the local area's rich history, we aim to give our residents a true sense of belonging. It’s all about helping them find their place, build civic awareness, and feel pride as they step back into society.

There’s no better place to start a fresh chapter than right here in the heart of this vibrant community!

Our management and staff team participated in CPD sessions facilitated by Dr. Kevin Sammut Henwood and Ms. Rianne Psaila.
The sessions focused on a trauma-informed approach to understanding and managing behaviour, specifically exploring how trauma impacts emotions, thought patterns, and responses. By integrating tools from CBT and DBT, we are enhancing our capacity to provide responsive and effective support within our residential programmes.

As they say, 'time flies when you're busy.' Between a full schedule and our ongoing work, we almost forgot that today is our 31st anniversary! But truthfully, spending the day doing what we do best is the best way to celebrate. Through all the highs and lows, we remain committed to our cause. Thank you to everyone who has believed in Fondazzjoni Mid-Dlam għad-Dawl over these past 31 years.

In today’s world, digital access isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. Through our 'Digital Access Post Incarceration' project, we are providing residents with access to computers, basic digital skills training, one-to-one support, and a safe space to engage with technology as part of their journey towards independence and reintegration.

This project has been funded by the Small Initiatives Scheme (SIS), managed by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) and supported by the Ministry for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector (MIV).
