Today at the Maltese Association of Social Workers Social Work Conference, we presented our new study: "PROSTITUTION: You Pay with Your Soul — Women's Lived Experiences of Prostitution in Malta: Engaging in Dialogue on Prostitution Policy".

Commissioned by Dar Hosea, funded by the Embassy of the Netherlands, and authored by Dr. Patricia Bonello (Discern) and Maria Giulia Borg, this research addresses the stark divide between abstract policy discourse and the harsh realities faced by women involved in prostitution in Malta.

Today, Dar Hosea had the pleasure of participating in Red Flags, Real Talk, a youth conference held at MCAST and led by the National Council of Women Malta.

We had the opportunity to engage with students in meaningful conversations about healthy relationships, recognising the warning signs of abusive or controlling behaviour, and knowing where to turn for support.

Thank you to the National Council of Women for creating this valuable space for discussion and awareness among young people. ✊

We are shocked by the murder of Miriam Azzopardi.
She died under tragic circumstances that no woman should ever have to endure.
Not just her body was bought with those 10 euros.
But her life.
Miriam was more than the circumstances of her death. Her life mattered.
No man should believe that access to a woman’s body can be bought.
Women’s bodies and lives are not for sale.
We need to safeguard and protect every woman.
We need to confront exploitation.
We need to prevent femicide.
No woman should be left behind.
No one should suffer as Miriam did.
It’s already too late but can it at least stop here?

The conference will present the findings of a research study, the first of its kind in Malta, exploring the demand for paid s*x after having conducted numerous interviews with men who pay for s*x. The study examines buyers' attitudes, motivations and behaviours, providing new insights into the factors that continue to drive demand for prostitution.
