Come and experience a public space intervention shaped by community voices from Żurrieq, Safi, and Kirkop.

This touring exhibition brings together modular structures, illustrations, photographs, posters, and clay works created through an art-based, community-led research process. It explores how safer, greener, and more connected public spaces can support wellbeing and everyday life, especially through the voices of children and young people.

The project is led by Dr Rachael Marie Scicluna, Chairperson of the Guardian of Future Generations, with research led by the Gabriel Caruana Foundation.

Research team: Raffaella Zammit (Research Lead, GCF) and Martina Camilleri (Co-Researcher, GCF).

Modular structures co-produced by the Gabriel Caruana Foundation and Text Catalogue

Co-production team: Elyse Tonna (GCF) with Ella Fleri Soler and Andrew Darmanin (Text Catalogue) and illustrations by Adrian Gauci.

...“It was a moment we looked forward to every day, gathering around the radio transmitter.”

Perceptions of Being was a journey started with deep listening, around a year ago. An experiment in seeing where the process will lead.

To new methods.
To unfamiliar materials.
To time committed .

Across ages and experiences, people sat side by side, making, experimenting, and slowly tuning into shared or diverging rhythms. Trust wasn't assumed, but evolved, making space for stories to surface.

✨ While reflecting and celebrating the people that we've met along the 2025 path, we hope to reconnect and come together as we greet 2026 - and the journey that awaits!

“It was a moment we looked forward to everyday, gathering around the radio transmitter.”

Countless conversations inspired what Perceptions of Being, the second year of Layers of Being, came to be.

Perceptions of Being will be celebrated with an evening dedicated to individuals and organisations who continue to activate and reimagine spaces with the people that inhabit them. You are invited to be a part of ‘Redifjuxin’, a wavelength and frequency ideated with participants from Friends of Don Bosco and the Gabriel Caruana Foundation team during a series of hands-on sound and art experimentation sessions.

🗓 On Thursday 15/01/2026 we welcome those who are curious about and who supported the project in many ways, friends and colleagues to come together for an evening of sharing, interacting, networking and contemplating shared futures at the Valletta Design Cluster Rooftop (weather permitting).

Our Story

The birth of the Gabriel Caruana Foundation (GCF) is the natural progression of a lifetime that Gabriel Caruana (1929 - 2018) dedicated to art, building a legacy, a philosophy of life that he himself, his family and a few close friends wanted to be continued. The Gabriel Caruana Foundation has been established to promote and preserve the artistic legacy of modern and contemporary art exponents, to encourage and provide opportunities for established and emerging artists and to raise awareness and promote quality modern and contemporary art in the Maltese Islands and beyond.

The Foundation fosters diversity, as well as social and cultural dialogue and development through local, national and international networks. The GCF fosters creativity and innovation within the modern and contemporary art sector in Malta. The Foundation strives to raise awareness, appreciation, participation and provide opportunities in modern and contemporary art. The GCF, a non-profit organisation, shall strive to reach-out, collaborate, and engage with the general public and other entities. The GCF is focusing its efforts on archiving and digitization processes, making art more accessible through a variety of activities and networks.
